Asking for forgiveness is important. Sariputta, the Buddha’s deputy is by nature forgiving and the Buddha told the monk to ask for forgiveness from Sariputta because without asking for forgiveness the matter cannot be settled. In response, Sariputta not only forgave the monk, he asked the monk for forgiveness for whatever offence he may have incurred on the monk.

Sariputta asked the Buddha for forgiveness and the Buddha forgave him even though he did not offend:

When Sariputta bid his goodbye to the Buddha, he asked the Buddha for forgiveness if he had displeased or offended the Buddha. The Buddha replied that Sariputta had done nothing that displeased him but nevertheless the Buddha forgave Sariputta.

The Buddha never asked Sariputta for forgiveness because he is the perfect one, impeccable in conduct and speech and cannot have offended anyone. He is the highest, the absolute Lord and has no equal and so could not have offended anyone.

Punishment is not equal for everyone:

Every eon has its Buddha:

According to the Buddha, every eon or age has its Buddha or fully self awakened one and He is this eon’s Buddha. Each eon has only one Buddha.

Just as there are horses and cats and trees in this eon, there horses, cats and trees in past eons and will be in future eons.
