Rules are simply commands or instructions you or others formulate that instruct, order you how to behave that you remember and obey accordingly that makes you a blind slave of the rule. Rules are standardized not specific instructions applicable to a variety of situations, they are unnecessary if you have understanding and they can be dangerous because they are standardized, blind.

Rules are never truths but they are fabrications of blind men. You are a slave never master of rules eg the rules of golf you memorize and replay.

What is understanding?

Understanding is simply the ability to see the truth when pointed out to him, it's the most valuable acquisition according to the Buddha because the suffering totally ended is like an ocean.

It can be seen directly by those who are able to understand that everyone here is replaying saying and doing things standardized talking about false memory subjects. Those who are able to understand see this after it is pointed out to them.

Those who have styles cannot understand because they are totally dependent on their blind record replay memory to say or do things. Only a few of those with style can develop understanding after being instructed.

What or who are the potential sources of truth?

Confucius is a human sage but he has limited wisdom or vision, his teachings are basically around correct conduct among men. There are many human sages or icons like Plato, Socrates, many more but the truths they espouse are impure, lowly. Apart from human sages there are various messengers or prophets from heaven but these too are limited. This leaves Jesus who came directly from God and the Buddha who claims he is fully self awakened, Tathagatha, the One who thus comes, teacher of men and gods, knower of the worlds including the animal world, heaven and hell and nirvana.

The above are the only potential sources of wisdom, knowledge and truth namely sons of men, son of God and the Buddha.

What Jesus said is that the counselor will guide you or lead you, shepherd you to all the truth and these sources of truth apart from Jesus must be higher otherwise it is not worthy of knowing. Truth is singular so there are no other truths to rival Jesus but there may be or there is a higher truth other than Jesus's and this is the Buddha's teachings and this cannot be ignored or denied in truth and so the counselor will guide you to all the truth that must include what the Buddha taught.
