US money supply plunges at 1930s pace as Obama eyes fresh stimulus

(Like the phony war at the start of the second World War, this may be the calm before the unleashed financial fury.)

The M3 money supply in the United States is contracting at an accelerating rate that now matches the average decline seen from 1929 to 1933, despite near zero interest rates and the biggest fiscal blitz in history.

The M3 figures - which include broad range of bank accounts and are tracked by British and European monetarists for warning signals about the direction of the US economy a year or so in advance - began shrinking last summer. The pace has since quickened.

The stock of money fell from $14.2 trillion to $13.9 trillion in the three months to April, amounting to an annual rate of contraction of 9.6pc. The assets of insitutional money market funds fell at a 37pc rate, the sharpest drop ever.

 

"It’s frightening," said Professor Tim Congdon from International Monetary Research. "The plunge in M3 has no precedent since the Great Depression. The dominant reason for this is that regulators across the world are pressing banks to raise capital asset ratios and to shrink their risk assets. This is why the US is not recovering properly," he said.

The US authorities have an entirely different explanation for the failure of stimulus measures to gain full traction. They are opting instead for yet further doses of Keynesian spending, despite warnings from the IMF that the gross public debt of the US will reach 97pc of GDP next year and 110pc by 2015.

Larry Summers, President Barack Obama’s top economic adviser, has asked Congress to "grit its teeth" and approve a fresh fiscal boost of $200bn to keep growth on track. "We are nearly 8m jobs short of normal employment. For millions of Americans the economic emergency grinds on," he said.

David Rosenberg from Gluskin Sheff said the White House appears to have reversed course just weeks after Mr Obama vowed to rein in a budget deficit of $1.5 trillion (9.4pc of GDP) this year and set up a commission to target cuts. "You truly cannot make this stuff up. The US governnment is freaked out about the prospect of a double-dip," he said.

The White House request is a tacit admission that the economy is already losing thrust and may stall later this year as stimulus from the original $800bn package starts to fade.

Recent data have been mixed. Durable goods orders jumped 2.9pc in April but house prices have been falling for several months and mortgage applications have dropped to a 13-year low. The ECRI leading index of US economic activity has been sliding continuously since its peak in October, suffering the steepest one-week drop ever recorded in mid-May.

Mr Summers acknowledged in a speech this week that the eurozone crisis had shone a spotlight on the dangers of spiralling public debt. He said deficit spending delays the day of reckoning and leaves the US at the mercy of foreign creditors. Ultimately, "failure begets failure" in fiscal policy as the logic of compound interest does its worst.

However, Mr Summers said it would be "pennywise and pound foolish" to skimp just as the kindling wood of recovery starts to catch fire. He said fiscal policy comes into its own at at time when the economy "faces a liquidity trap" and the Fed is constrained by zero interest rates.

Mr Congdon said the Obama policy risks repeating the strategic errors of Japan, which pushed debt to dangerously high levels with one fiscal boost after another during its Lost Decade, instead of resorting to full-blown "Friedmanite" monetary stimulus.

"Fiscal policy does not work. The US has just tried the biggest fiscal experiment in history and it has failed. What matters is the quantity of money and in extremis that can be increased easily by quantititave easing. If the Fed doesn’t act, a double-dip recession is a virtual certainty," he said.

Mr Congdon said the dominant voices in US policy-making - Nobel laureates Paul Krugman and Joe Stiglitz, as well as Mr Summers and Fed chair Ben Bernanke - are all Keynesians of different stripes who "despise traditional monetary theory and have a religious aversion to any mention of the quantity of money". The great opus by Milton Friedman and Anna Schwartz - The Monetary History of the United States - has been left to gather dust.

Mr Bernanke no longer pays attention to the M3 data. The bank stopped publishing the data five years ago, deeming it too erratic to be of much use.

This may have been a serious error since double-digit growth of M3 during the US housing bubble gave clear warnings that the boom was out of control. The sudden slowdown in M3 in early to mid-2008 - just as the Fed raised rates - gave a second warning that the economy was about to go into a nosedive.

Mr Bernanke built his academic reputation on the study of the credit mechanism. This model offers a radically different theory for how the financial system works. While so-called "creditism" has become the new orthodoxy in US central banking, it has not yet been tested over time and may yet prove to be a misadventure.

Paul Ashworth at Capital Economics said the decline in M3 is worrying and points to a growing risk of deflation. "Core inflation is already the lowest since 1966, so we don’t have much margin for error here. Deflation becomes a threat if it goes on long enough to become entrenched," he said.

However, Mr Ashworth warned against a mechanical interpretation of money supply figures. "You could argue that M3 has been going down because people have been taking their money out of accounts to buy stocks, property and other assets," he said.

Events may soon tell us whether this is benign or malign. It is certainly remarkable.

Knowledge to the end of suffering:

The Buddha had in many places said that ordinary people have suffering due to them that is as vast as an ocean compared to the few drops of water that remain in those who are noble and even this few drops is at most seven more lifetimes of wandering.

You must remember the lifetimes of the gods are very long, the maximum lifetime is 60,000 eternities or ages or eons if one has overcome all considerations of consciousness to access the sphere of nothingness. The angels in heaven (serenity of mind and body with discursive thinking) enjoy one eternity in heaven, those who can attain one pointedness of mind without thought two eternities in heaven, neither liking nor disliking four eternities, neither pain nor pleasure 500 eternities.

THUS THE FEW DROPS THAT IS AT MOST SEVEN MORE LIFETIMES CAN SPAN VERY LONG TIME IF THEY ARE SPENT IN THE HIGHER REACHES OF HEAVEN.

Obama shows his dishonesty:

The occasional flinching of the dedication to falsity:

People don’t just put on their clothes each morning to go face the world but they put on their individual false masks that they protect and uphold with grim determination as true.

Emotional stylish people can tell straight faced lies, without knowing whether what they say is true or not or knowing what they say is false or rehashed standardized, they can put on a mask as if they know what they said that they did not know is true or they know is false or is rehashed is true and fully meant.

But occasionally, when they are tired, stressed or something is bothering them or they become self conscious, then their confidence and determination in their faking flinches or wavers and they fear they are exposing themselves and try to hide this exposure as much as they can as Obama is doing by looking away and using his hand to hide his face.

Malaysians are good drivers with bad habits:

Most if not all emotional people reading it do not know what to make of it.

What he said is always false in more ways than one and he is trying to be clever not realizing he is heading for torment.

First of all, Malaysian drivers (not all Malaysians are drivers) are a diverse lot, there are good and bad drivers and so it is false to say they are all good drivers except they have bad habits.

Secondly, so long as a driver has bad habits he is a bad driver. If you think it is possible to be a good driver and have bad habits, you may be right or flirting with false perception that ends in mad perception.

Cut subsidies to APs & IPPs not people:

 

‘No need to subsidise the rich’

 

BUTTERWORTH: The Federal Government should withdraw its subsidies to cash-rich Approved Permit (AP) holders, independent power producers, companies and toll concessionaires instead of removing those that will affect the lower income group.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said power producers received RM13bil in yearly subsidies while toll concessionaires enjoyed RM4.6bil.

“The Government should also make it a policy to award contracts through an open tender system to avoid inflated costs due to possible corrupt practices in securing projects.

“The country will not go bankrupt because the Government gave subsidies to the rakyat. But it could go bankrupt if corruption is not nipped in the bud,” he said after attending Wesak Day prayers at the Butterworth Buddhist Association in Mak Mandin here yesterday.

Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, said the Penang Government could afford to give back to the rakyat via its senior citizens appreciation programme and water bill rebate scheme due to its prudent and accountable management.

In Petaling Jaya, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said the Government needed to address corruption, mismanagement, extravagance and lack of accountability to achieve real savings.

Writing in his blog, he said Idris had failed to address the root causes of the national economic crisis by just dealing with its symptoms.

He also accused the Government of having “no credibility” when it talked about slashing subsidies as it had nothing to show about ending the rampant and worsening state of corruption and abuse.

The spectre of debt:

Spectre means ghost or apparition.

It is an inappropriate description to call the current debt woes besetting many countries as a spectre. It is a crisis of debt, something that has built up to severe system threatening proportion.

It was said by one of the persons who ‘predicted’ this crisis that the next phase is coming. In the first phase, debts created by banks were passed on to national governments and now national governments all over the world including US, UK, Japan and many more have suddenly much greater debts on their hands that is likely to become system threatening again.

So those who think we have averted the worst are deluded. We have delayed the inevitable, transferred debt from private hands to governments who were themselves in serious debts and now the sudden massive added debts threaten to sink governments.

Obama in trouble with his sponsors:

According to Krugman, Obama’s stance on regulating banks has cost him donations from big banks and Wall Street. There is a significant reduction of donations to him and increase to the Republicans.

The people vote Obama into office but once in office, he looks after his sponsors, the donors that enable him to be elected as president. If he fails to look after his sponsors they threaten his demise.

Once the president covers the backsides of bankers, they proceed to bankrupt the system with impunity. After bankrupting banks they are paid handsome severances packages rather than charged with fraud and jailed.

THE PRESIDENT AND CONGRESSMEN ARE NOT TRULY INDEPENDENT BUT BEHOLDEN PEOPLE WHO MUST SURREPTITIOUSLY LOOK AFTER THE BIG FIRMS THAT DONATE TO THEM. THIS IS CALLED CORRUPTION WHICH IS WHY FEW IF ANY POLITICIANS ARE HEADED FOR HEAVEN.

Wee & Tan never denied taking bribes:

You would expect Wee & Tan who exited PKR to be upset about Wan Azizah’s allegations that those who left were paid $2 million and had contracts.

Notice that in spite of their indignations, requests to show proof and declaration of willingness to cooperate with MACC (who are unlikely to investigate the matter) they did not state, according to press reports that they did not receive bribes or contracts.

Enraging means stirs anger or the mental force repulsively and heartbreaking means stirring mental force to be hurt and sad.

THUS THE PRESIDENT IS TALKING ENTIRELY OF STIRRED MENTAL FORCE THAT DOES NO USEFUL WORK, IS STRESSFUL, WARPS THE MIND AND BLIND WITHOUT MEANING. WHEN PEOPLE APPRECIATE WHAT OBAMA SAID, THEY ARE APPRECIATING BLIND, HARMFUL MEANINGLESS STIRRING OF MENTAL FORCE.

WHAT IS RELEVANT IS THE SUBSTANCE OF THE OCCASION WHICH IS THAT THIS IS S VERY SERIOUS CRISIS CAUSED BY INCOMPETENCE, NEGLECT AND HAS FAR REACHING EFFECTS AND IT MAY BE DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO CAP.

You have to fabricate, make effort to search for rhyming synonyms to use in order to speak thus and because it is totally unnecessary except to impress others, you are doing something that is useless that is the path to loss of control and uncontrolled insanity.

Comparing salaries leads to blues:

It is not comparing salaries that lead to blues but it is comparing salaries accompanied by jealousy and envy that leads to blues.

A person who is content with himself, denies himself has no wish to compare his income with anyone else and should he know the much greater income of others, he is not driven to jealousy or envy and thence blues which is a nice word for sadness or depression.

People see nothing wrong, see it as meaningful when it is meaningless and suffering.

By ‘feeling’ people often mistake emotions which are senseless suffering stirring of mental forces in response to happenings.

Assuming they correctly denote feelings as sensations which can only be pleasant, unpleasant or neither pleasant nor unpleasant according to the Buddha, they are still talking about experiencing force because reception of force is the essential ingredient of pleasant feelings (usually mild to moderate force gives pleasure but strong force can give pleasure to masochists) and unpleasant feelings (strong force experienced gives pain).

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF EXPERIENCING MILD FORCE (PLEASANT) AND STRONG FORCE (UNPLEASANT OR PAINFUL) WHEN THEY ALWAYS CAUSING STRESS OR PAIN IN THE END? PLEASURE TOO IS PAIN BECAUSE YOU NEED TO RECEIVE FORCE TO HAVE PLEASURE. THEREFORE THE PERSON WHO SAYS ‘ONCE MORE WITH FEELINGS’ IS TALKING NONSENSE OR SOMETHING THAT IS HARMFUL NOT GOOD, DOES NOT UNDERSTAND TRULY WHAT SHE SPEAKS.

Feelings & emotions:

Anyone who talks of feelings when he means emotion is a muddled man who does not know what he speaks.

Emotions are characteristic stirrings of a person’s mental force that can only be attractive (like or excitement), repulsive (anger, hate, dislike), sad (prolonging), hurt (accelerating in speed and strength), confusion (disorganized stirring of mental force) and fear.

Feelings are passive reception of force impacting on the consciousness that can be pleasant (mild to moderate force experienced on contact through the senses eg sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) or unpleasant (usually strong, concentrated force impacting through the senses).

THUS WHEN A PERSON EXPERIENCE PLEASURE THROUGH THE SENSES (EG GENTLE BREEZE, LIGHT TOUCH OF A WOMAN, SMELL AND TASTE OF ‘GOOD’ FOOD) HE IS EXPERIENCING FORCE THAT IS BLIND, MEANINGLESS, PERISHABLE AND LEADS TO STRESS. ANYONE HOOKED ON PLEASURE IS HOOKED ON SUFFERING AND FORCE THAT LEADS TO DESTRUCTION OR DEATH WHICH IS WHY LOWER BEINGS HAVE AT MOST 4 ETERNITIES IN HEAVEN WHILST THOSE WHO TUNE THEIR CONSCIOUSNESS TO NEITHER EXPERIENCE PAIN NOR PLEASURE HAVE A LIFESPAN OF 500 EONS OR EVEN MORE. WHERE THERE IS FORCE THERE IS DEATH AND SUFFERING, WHERE THERE IS NO FORCE THERE IS NO DEATH.

How long is an eon or eternity? The Buddha said that if you took one mustard seed out of a room filled with those seeds every 100 years, you will have emptied the room but the eternity has still not ended.

THUS ONE EON IS A VERY LONG TIME AND THOSE AT THE HIGHEST REACHES OF HEAVEN HAVE LIFESPANS THAT ARE 500 TO 60,000 EONS.

What is life without feelings?

This is a deluded wrong question.

The person is asking a question when he means ‘life is meaningless or worthless without feelings’ or ‘feelings are what makes life worth living’.

You have false perception that will end in mad perception if you perceive that ‘what is life without feelings’ means or is the same as ‘life without feelings is meaningless’ and therefore the person is speaking falsely, does not say what he meant.

Further, he is deluded, not only is life worth living without feelings, it is far more meaningful, blissful and everlasting without feelings or emotions.

YOU HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED AN ABSENCE OF FEELINGS SO HOW WOULD YOU KNOW IT IS WORTHLESS? LIFE IS MORE MEANINGFUL, FREED OF SUFFERING AND EVERLASTING WITHOUT FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS AND SO THAT IS A DELUDED STATEMENT THAT IS LADEN WITH KARMA BY EXHORTING OTHERS TO FEEL OR BE EMOTIONAL.

It is because their understanding of what disasters can happen is false that they are stunned. If their understanding is true then because this has happened they should have expected it not to be stunned.

What is the point of being stunned or your mental force stirred so strongly as to seize or freeze your mind in fear or alarm that restricts your response to an emergency? Thus what is spoken of is silly, bad not meaningful or good. You can only be hardened by force, by cynicism or derision and a derisive person has a closed fixed prejudiced mind which is why they are caught unaware.

The person responsible thinks what he said is full of meaning, he is trying to exaggerate the scale of the disaster by saying even hardened men are stunned when it says little or nothing of meaning.

Where music is the appropriate language:

This is a false statement conditioning the person and others to false perception.

Music is music and language is language, anyone equating music with language is dicing with mad perception.

You may say it is understood that what is said is not literal but that is foolishness. Whatever you say must be literal unless you want to go mad.

A language is where written symbols or groups of syllables are joined to produce sounds that encode certain meanings in terms of objects and actions. Musical notes together or singly never encode or represent specific meanings in terms of objects and actions and so it is never a language except in your false perception you do not believe will lead to mad perception.

MUSIC IS MUSIC AND LANGUAGE IS LANGUAGE, THE TWO ARE VERY DIFFERENT THINGS EVEN IF THEY SHARE THE COMMON USE OF SOUNDS, ONE TO CONVEY OBJECTS AND ACTIONS, THE OTHER MERELY FOR SOUND EFFECTS. MUSIC IS NEVER A LANGUAGE EXCEPT IN YOUR FALSE PERCEPTION.

THUS BY HOPING FOR OTHERS WHAT YOU HAVE NO POWER TO ENSURE, YOU MUST STIR DOUBT AND UNCERTAINTY IN WHAT YOU SAY THAT IT MAY BE ALL IN VAIN OR HOLLOW. IF YOU TRULY PERCEIVE YOUR HOPE IS TRUE OR MEANINGFUL YOU MUST BE HAUNTED BY DOUBT OR DREAD THAT IT MAY BE WORTHLESS, IF NOT IT IS JUST A GLIB CONDITIONED REGURGITATED NICETY.

HOW CAN ANY TRULY DELIVER HIS HOPE FOR A NICE DAY FOR ANOTHER? IF HE CANNOT DELIVER THEN IT IS HOLLOW AND YOU CANNOT BE SINCERE FOR WHAT IS HOLLOW.

If a person will have a nice day he needs no hope:

If a person will have a nice day he does not need any hope from you or anyone to have a nice day. If he is not having a nice day then all the hoping by you or anyone is not going to make him have a nice day but instead stir conflict in him that he is having a rotten day despite your hope for him.

If he should make effort to have a nice day when he isn’t having one just because you hoped so, then he will be forcing himself, contriving, fabricating his nice day and rather than being nice, it is make believe and counterproductive.

Wishing is about emotion not truth:

The purpose of wishing others this and that is not to wish as stated but to show concern and goodwill for the person. You don’t say things to show concern but you say or do things that benefit and make the other happy.

People wish others a nice day, a happy birthday, a happy holiday, marriage, new year, etc but it has no rational basis or does not serve any real purpose but instead the purpose is about stirring emotion in self and others that you have care and concern for them and the wishing is driven by emotion (force) never reason or understanding.

It is not an accident that the Buddha or Jesus was never recorded as having wished anyone a good life or anything because it is meaningless, useless.

It is because emotional people are in truth suffering, fearful but desire happiness or pleasure that being wished a happy birthday or marriage or whatever stirs or rouses them (their mental force not reason is stirred) to be pleased to embrace the wisher as having their wellbeing at heart and therefore a friend or someone to be trusted when it may be glib or for show and even if it is true, the person ‘sincerely’ wished you well, he has no power to deliver that wish or ensure you are well or happy as he wished.

It is not within the control or powers of the person wished to have a happy day or whatever, circumstances, some unexpected event may thwart his desire for happiness and so it is an enterprise without substance or truth to wish another well or happiness or wealth.

THUS THE CRUX OF WISHING SOMEONE IS NOT TO WISH HIM WHAT IS SPECIFIED BUT TO CONVEY TRULY OR FALSELY (HYPOCRITICALLY) YOU HAVE GOODWILL AND CONCERN FOR THE PERSON. YOU ACTUALLY HARM A PERSON BY WISHING HIM THIS OR THAT BECAUSE IT STIRS HIS EMOTIONS THAT HARMS HIM AND YOU ARE DELUDED YOU ARE DOING HIM GOOD WISHING HIM THIS AND THAT WHEN YOU ARE HARMING HIM BY STIRRING HIS EMOTIONS.

The purpose of wishing someone well or many happy returns or whatever is not as stated, your wish for that which is uncertain, may not be realized and you have done nothing to ensure that but to show your concern or care for the person so that he will treat you as a friend or open his heart to you. You don’t show concern or care for another by wishing him this and that you but you truly show concern or care for another by words and actions that benefit and care for another.

YOU HAVE FALSE PERCEPTION THAT WILL END IN MAD PERCEPTION IF YOU THINK ‘WISHING SOMEONE GOOD LUCK’ CARES FOR HIM. WHAT YOU SAY OR DOES THAT MATERIALLY OR SPIRITUALLY BENEFITS OR ASSISTS HIM IS HOW YOU TRULY SHOW CARE AND CONCERN.

IF YOU TRULY CARE OR ARE CONCERNED FOR SOMEONE, YOU DO NOT SHOW IT BY WISHING HIM THIS AND THAT BUT YOU DEMONSTRATE YOUR CARE AND CONCERN BY DEEDS AND WORDS THAT BENEFIT HIM. THE ‘BENEFIT’ OF WISHING SOMEONE WELL IS THAT HIS MENTAL FORCE IS STIRRED BY YOUR ‘TOUCHING’ WORDS AND THAT IS FALSE NOT TRUE BENEFIT BECAUSE THE STIRRED FORCE HARMS HIM AND HE IS A FOOL TO THINK HE IS BENEFITED.

IT MAY BE THAT YOU MAY SAY ‘WISHING SOMEONE WELL’ BENEFITS THEM BUT NOTHING CONCRETE IS DELIVERED, THE BENEFIT IS THE STIRRED EMOTIONS THE WORDS CONVEY THAT ACTUALLY HARMS THE PERSON BY STIRRING HIS EMOTION.

THEREFORE YOU ACTUALLY HARM A PERSON BY WISHING HIM THIS OR THAT BECAUSE IT STIRS HIS EMOTIONS THAT HARMS HIM AND YOU ARE DELUDED YOU ARE DOING HIM GOOD WISHING HIM THIS AND THAT WHEN YOU ARE HARMING HIM BY STIRRING HIS EMOTIONS.

It is much copied and established socially, even expected for people to wish others this and that eg many happy returns, good luck, happy journey, etc.

The purpose of wishing people this and that is not as stated but to convey your care and concern for them so that they will be bonded to you, like you and open their hearts (and purse and body) to you.

Rather than doing the person good, wishing another well is harmful with karma due because it cannot deliver what is wished but it always stirs the recipient’s emotion and that stresses and harms his mind and so you have debt harming another person by stirring his emotion.

You truly show care and concern for another not by stirring his emotions to wish him well but you assist him, provide him with succour when needed.

WISHING OTHERS WELL IS HOLLOW, CHEAP, FOR SHOW INTENDED TO STIR EMOTIONS THAT IS HARMFUL. YOU TRULY SHOW CONCERN AND CARE BY DEEDS AND WORDS THAT HELP OR BENEFIT ANOTHER.

Care, not show care:

Do and say things that truly care for others, not show care by saying that achieves nothing “I wish you many happy returns”.

You say things that care by not abusing the other person, by not insulting, not speaking falsely or frivolously or saying things that provide insight and assistance to him. You do things that care for another by providing shelter, food and assistance when troubled.

“I wish you many happy returns” is for show, cannot deliver what is wished but is sinfully intended to stir the recipient’s emotions to be moved or touched and because stirred emotions harms his mind you have debt rather than merit due.
