people will be jobless and the money saved can be diverted to employ people who
are doing useful jobs.
MANY JOBS ARE INVENTED IN THIS MODERN DAY AND PAID HIGHLY WHEN IT IS NOT
CERTAIN THEY ARE USEFUL, SHOULD THEY BE FIRED THEN A LOT OF MONEY CAN BE

show or meaningful and the amount of money gone to pay high paying useless jobs
have reached cancerous proportions in modern society and will kill off the

through conversion of forests to oil palm estates. Oil palm estates can never
replace forests which prevent the sun shining on the soil directly and they
retain moisture in the soil even in the dry season. With oil palm estates, the
spaced out palms permit the sun to shine on the ground and dry it whilst
irrigation channels constructed further drain the soil rather than retain
moisture.
IT IS NOT SLASH AND BURN THAT CAUSED THE HAZE.
IT IS OUT
OF CONTROL SLASH AND BURN THAT CAUSES HAZES.
SLASH AND BURN NOW (EASILY) RUNS OUT OF CONTROL BECAUSE THE PEAT IN THE SOIL

Even if Sumatra had lots of peat, as long as it remains wet, it would

AND BURN SUICIDAL OR LETHAL WHERE PREVIOUSLY IT WAS MANAGEABLE.
Why
is the haze so bad this year?
Even though the peat is now exposed and dried, it may need to reach a
certain dryness that was not reached in previous years before it becomes
potential mass tinder.
In the wet seasons the peat absorbs moisture and if the dry season is
not particularly dry, the moisture in the peat does not fall below a threshold
then slash and burn by locals may not cause an inferno and it is this that may
deceive the locals.
IN PREVIOUS YEARS THE EXPOSED PEAT MAY NOT HAVE REACHED A THRESHOLD

Decision is about deciding what to do or say and it is always stressful

Wielding Derivatives as a
Tool for Deceit

Derivatives
are not always “financial weapons of mass destruction,” as Warren Buffett
famously called them.
But they
are often weapons of mass deception.
For some
derivatives, a desire for deception is the only reason they exist. That
deception can allow those who own derivatives to evade taxes or accounting
rules. It can allow activity that might otherwise be illegal, were it not
called a derivative, or that would face regulation if it were labeled what it
truly is.
Sometimes,
banks use derivatives they create to help their clients deceive the public.
Other times, they enable the banks to deceive those clients.
The
latest revelation of deception by derivative came in Italian government documents
leaked this week to two European newspapers, La Repubblica and The Financial
Times. The Financial Times said it appeared that Italy had used derivatives in
the 1990s to allow it to make its budget deficit seem smaller, thus enabling it
to qualify for admission to the euro zone. The report said it appeared those
derivatives, now restructured, might be exposing Italy to a loss of 8 billion
euros ($10.4 billion).
La
Repubblica noted that the director general of the Italian Treasury Department
at the time, Mario Draghi, is now running the European Central Bank.
Italy’s
economy minister, Fabrizio Saccomanni, said it was “absolutely baseless” to say
that the country used derivatives to lie its way into the euro zone. It was
simply hedging against market risks. As for the current situation, he said,
“There’s been no material damage to our public finances.” He drew a distinction
between realized losses and those based on market values that could change.
What
seems to have happened in Italy is similar to something that we already know
Greece did. Rather than borrow money — which would increase the reported budget
deficit — the country entered into a derivatives contract that called for the
banks to make large upfront payments in return for larger payments later from
the government.
And how
did that differ from a loan? Functionally, not very much, in all probability.
But if you call something a derivative you can often get away with keeping it
off your balance sheet — or putting it on the balance sheet in a misleading
way. If The Financial Times report is right, the deal made Italy’s reported
budget deficit smaller just when the country needed that to join the euro zone.
There is
some evidence that Europe knew what was going on and chose to ignore it.
Joining the euro was seen as more of a political event than an economic one, a
symbol of European unity.
The
effect of the funny accounting was similar to that of a student cheating on
college entrance exams. The student may get into a university where he or she
cannot compete, just as Italy and Greece find themselves in a currency bloc
where their economies are at a significant disadvantage.
But while
uncompetitive students can drop out, or be expelled, the euro zone rules
provide that no country can leave. That fact, perhaps more than anything else,
accounts for the persistence of the euro zone crisis.
Such
deception by derivative is hardly new. Enron was a pioneer. It used derivatives
called “prepaid forward” contracts to hide debt in a way that made corporate cash
flow appear better, something the company thought was necessary to impress the
bond rating agencies.
Responding
to claims that his bank and Citibank had made “disguised loans” to Enron, a
JPMorgan Chase executive told a Senate hearing in 2002 that “the prepaid
forwards were undoubtedly financing, as all contracts are that involve
prepayment features, but every financing is not a loan.” He said the bank had
properly accounted for them, but “the manner in which Enron accounted for them”
was of no concern to the bank. It was, instead, “a matter for Enron and its
management and auditors.”
That was
not the way the banks saw it when they were seeking the business. “The
evidence,” said Senator Susan Collins, Republican of Maine, “revealed them to
be nothing more than sham transactions designed to obtain, as one of the banks
continued to tout on its Web site, ‘financial statement friendly financing.’
Like so many of the other deals at Enron, the apparent motive was to portray a
false image of the company’s financial health.”
That
“friendly financing” came at an extra cost, of course. In reality, the banks
charged Enron a fee for enabling it to deceive. Those same banks ended up
losing a lot of money when Enron collapsed. How could the banks have guessed
that a customer that would pay them to aid in lying would be less than honest
in dealing with them?
Calling
something a derivative can help a company get around inconvenient laws and
regulations. Intrade pioneered Internet gambling on everything from election results
to whether an executive in trouble would be forced to resign. Gambling? Perish
the thought. Those were “futures contracts.” That worked until this year, when
the United States government forced Intrade out of business.
Then
there are “credit default swaps,” which offer a payoff if a company or a
country defaults on its obligations. If you called that insurance, a company
issuing them would face requirements that it maintain reserves to pay future
claims. But call it a derivative, and the rules do not apply. The American
International Group was able to collect billions in premiums for such swaps
without taking any reserves. When the credit crisis arrived, A.I.G. would have
collapsed without a government bailout.
The
current accounting rules in the United States go so far as to say that banks
can hide obligations that are classified as derivatives. They do that by
“netting” derivative positions that are currently profitable against positions
that have losses, and show only the net value. That reduces the amount of
assets on their balance sheets and thus makes them appear less leveraged than
they are.
They can
do that even if the two positions have nothing in common — save the identity of
the counterparty on the other side of the transactions. It makes no sense at
all to be able to hide a bet on, say, the Canadian dollar, by offsetting it
against a bet on German stock prices. But that is legal now in the United
States.
The banks
have done an excellent job of persuading the Financial Accounting Standards Board,
which sets the rules, not to mess with them. Rather than force the banks to put
the assets and liabilities on their balance sheets, as is required in most
other countries, the board has proposed additional disclosures that might make
it easier to discern the reality.
And this
week the board proposed new accounting standards for insurance that would force
many contracts not called insurance — but being basically the same thing — to
be accounted for in the same way as insurance. But credit default swaps were
exempted. Why? The logic, such as it is, is that insurance is sold to people
who are seeking to be reimbursed for possible losses, like an automobile
accident. Because credit default swaps are sold to people who are simply
speculating, they can continue to be accounted for as derivatives.
None of
this is to argue that some things called derivatives cannot be useful in the
right circumstances. But in many cases those things deserve to be called what
they really are. Often, they are simply ways to place wagers.
A risk
for banks is that calling these things gambling could prejudice courts deciding
whether to enforce them. Many municipalities entered into what were called
interest-rate swaps with large banks before the credit crisis arrived. “The
cities,” says William J. Quirk, a law professor at the University of South
Carolina who formerly worked as a lawyer for the New York City, “lost every
bet.”
That may
be an overstatement. But those contracts have certainly produced large profits
for Wall Street, and many will continue to do so for years to come. “The funny
part of the story,” Mr. Quirk wrote in the July issue of Chronicles Magazine,
“is that the cities keep paying despite the fact they have a good legal
defense: The bets are not enforceable because cities are not authorized to
place bets with taxpayers’ money.”
Unless you want to go mad, you never cycle for any cause, good or bad

Heaven and enlightenment is the everlasting escapes from suffering and
the way to heaven and enlightenment is entirely hidden from the awareness of
ordinary people here and it takes true understanding to discover the path of
practice that if successfully undertaken (eg loving kindness shorn of urge to
attack and harm others), leads to escape from suffering.
SUFFERING IS THE UNIVERSAL CONDITION HERE, IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO YOU
ARE.
SUFFERING ALWAYS HAS CAUSE AND CURE BUT BEINGS HERE BLINDED BY FORCE
(HATE AND GREED), BY EMOTION CANNOT SEE THE CAUSE AND THUS CURE OF SUFFERING
AND SO THEY PLUNGE THEMSELVES INTO SUFFERING ENDLESSLY TO DIE AGAIN AND AGAIN.
WITHOUT CORRECTLY SEEING AND THUS UNDERSTANDING THE SOURCES OF SUFFERING

How do people understand such news? They think so long as there is

If there are never true reasons why they fought, fighting is based on
delusion and emotions, stirred force, greed and desire to harm others then you
are mad or deluded to want to tell others why they fought.
WHY THEY FOUGHT IMPLIES THERE ARE MEANINGFUL OR IMPORTANT REASONS TO
KNOW WHY THEY FOUGHT. IF THERE ARE NEVER ANY TRUE REASONS FOR FIGHTING, IT IS
DRIVEN BY FORCE OR EMOTION, BY GREED OR ILL WILL AND DELUSION, THEN YOU ARE
DELUDED IN ENDEAVOURING TO TELL OTHERS ‘WHY THEY FOUGHT’ AND ONLY A GULLIBLE
PERSON WOULD BE INTERESTED TO READ WHAT HE HAS TO SAY.
Chinese

The Buddha said you should see danger in the slightest of faults and so even if you are unaware of the havoc or harm your floating lantern or fireworks did, you are liable for the suffering that must be repaid by future suffering.
It is meaningless, totally unnecessary to set off floating lanterns or
fireworks and should they cause fire you are liable for suffering it causes. I
would not even think of setting off fireworks or lanterns, even for jest.
What
they fought for not why they fought:
For one who truly understands there are never true reasons why they
fight but it is a case of what they fought for eg independence, over a girl,
over lost pride or honour.
YOU FIGHT FOR SOMETHING, FOR YOUR PRIDE, FOR A GIRL, FOR A NATION, FOR A
CAUSE (INDEPENDENCE) NOT FOR A REASON BECAUSE THERE ARE NO TRUE REASONS TO
FIGHT, NO MAN OF TRUE REASON WILL FIGHT FOR ANYTHING.
WHAT THEY FOUGHT FOR IS A
CORRECT STATEMENT, WHY THEY FOUGHT IS SPEAKING INCORRECTLY. FIGHTS ARE OVER
OBJECTS, VIRTUAL OR PHYSICAL.
How
many people pay cash for cars?
Cars are largely bought on hire purchase which means it incurs debt
individually and on the economy as a whole and so surging car sales is not
something you should celebrate with glee unless you are a fool because it is
debt driven boost and the (borrowed) money is mostly squandered and due for
repayment or the economy will be saddled with more insoluble debt whose
reckoning is not immediate but later.
Why
they fight:
When people are threatened, fearful, they feel their existence is
threatened, they fight and that means it is force, stirred fear that is the
basis of their fighting.
When people suffer and their tolerance to suffering is pushed to the
brink they lash out or fight and that means it is force that triggers their
fighting.
When people are angry, they are stirred to be repulsed by things
happening they may fight and here again stirred force, anger is the basis of
their fighting.
When they are hateful, their mental forces are stirred to want to
attack, harm and kill others, they get into fights mental or verbal and here
again force is the basis of their fighting.
Programming is a basis of fighting, there are individuals who are like
pit bulls, raring for a fight, their mental forces programmed to attack others
at the slightest or no provocations.
Delusion too is a basis for fighting and delusions are programmed
falsities or beliefs never true reason. Thus Islamic fanatics become suicide
bombers because of the delusion they will be admitted to heaven.
IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER IT IS VERBAL OR PHYSICAL FIGHTING, FIGHTING
WITH SELF OR OTHER, YOU NEED TO STIR FORCE TO FIGHT.
ONLY FORCE CAN STIR FORCE, TRUE REASON NEVER HAS FORCE CAPABLE OF
STIRRING ONE’S MENTAL FORCE TO FIGHT.
AND SO ALL BASES OR SOURCES OF FIGHTING ARE BASED ON FORCE, FEAR,
SUFFERING, ANGER OR HATE, PROGRAMMING OR DELUSION.
THUS IF YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT WHY PEOPLE FIGHT YOU ARE DELUDED OR
SPEAKING FALSELY IF YOU DO NOT DWELL ON THE ABOVE REASONS.
Fighting
is based on programming and stirred mental force:
Without being programmed to fight and one’s mental force being stirred
or provoked the person cannot fight.
Ordinary people are all robots and they cannot do anything including
fight without being programmed they cannot fight and so when provoked they
rehash the substance and style of their verbal or physical fighting in their
individually stereotyped way. There are those who are not programmed to fight
or some who are programmed to only verbally fight and these are incapable of
fighting or physical fighting that they are not programmed.
In order for them to fight their mental forces must be stirred or
provoked to attack or resist and if it is provoked very strongly beyond their
control they may become uncontrollable, insane, throw all inhibitions to the
wind and risk getting themselves killed or killing someone.
Thus even a very timid man if he has been programmed to fight, he is
passively aggressive and harbours programs of attacking others, if sufficiently
provoked he may lose all control and even murder someone.
WITHOUT HARBOURING PROGRAMS TO FIGHT AND REHASHING FIGHTING, A PERSON
WHO IS A ROBOT CANNOT DO IT, CANNOT FIGHT. IN ORDER TO FIGHT THEY MUST BE
PROVOKED BY FORCE (EG THINGS SAID THAT HURT HIS FEELINGS OR THE FORCE CHANGES
OF OTHERS STIRRING HIS MENTAL FORCE TO BE PROVOKED).
NO REASON OR MEANING IS INVOLVED IN FIGHTING, IT IS BASED ENTIRELY ON
FORCE AND PROGRAMMING.
Everything
must be right to escape suffering and death:
Jesus said you must be perfect just as God is perfect and the noble
eightfold path the Buddha declared means everything must be perfect or right,
right view (correctly seeing everything as they actually are), right resolve
(towards renunciation, relinquishment, giving up, disentanglement), right
mindfulness (paying attention to the right things, ignoring the wrong or
unessential or false things) right persistence or effort (to relentlessly
pursue despite setbacks the deathless, the state without suffering here and
thereafter), right conduct, right speech, right livelihood, right concentration
(the 4 higher states of mind namely no style, no thinking, no like and dislike,
no pain or pleasure.)
"And what is the
path of practice leading to the cessation of kamma? Just this noble eightfold
path: right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood,
right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. This is called the path
of practice leading to the cessation of kamma. The Blessed One said, "I will teach & analyse for you the Noble Eightfold Path. Listen & pay close attention. I will speak."
"As you say, lord," the monks responded to him.
The Blessed One said, "Now what, monks, is the Noble Eightfold Path? Right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.
"And what, monks, is right view? Knowledge with regard to stress (suffering), knowledge with regard to the origination of stress(suffering), knowledge with regard to the stopping of stress, knowledge with regard to the way of practice leading to the stopping of stress: This, monks, is called right view.
"And what is right resolve? Being resolved on renunciation, on freedom from ill will, on harmlessness: This is called right resolve.
"And what is right speech? Abstaining from lying, abstaining from divisive speech, abstaining from abusive speech, abstaining from idle chatter: This, monks, is called right speech.
"And what, monks, is right action? Abstaining from taking life, abstaining from stealing, abstaining from sexual intercourse: This, monks, is called right action.
"And what, monks, is right livelihood? There is the case where a noble disciple, having abandoned dishonest livelihood, keeps his life going with right livelihood: This, monks, is called right livelihood.
"And what, monks, is right effort? (i) There is the case where a monk generates desire, endeavors, activates persistence, upholds & exerts his intent for the sake of the non-arising of evil, unskillful qualities that have not yet arisen. (ii) He generates desire, endeavors, activates persistence, upholds & exerts his intent for the sake of the abandonment of evil, unskillful qualities that have arisen. (iii) He generates desire, endeavors, activates persistence, upholds & exerts his intent for the sake of the arising of skillful qualities that have not yet arisen. (iv) He generates desire, endeavors, activates persistence, upholds & exerts his intent for the maintenance, non-confusion, increase, plenitude, development, & culmination of skillful qualities that have arisen: This, monks, is called right effort.
"And what, monks, is right mindfulness? (i) There is the case where a monk remains focused on the body in & of itself -- ardent, aware, & mindful -- putting away greed & distress with reference to the world. (ii) He remains focused on feelings in & of themselves -- ardent, aware, & mindful -- putting away greed & distress with reference to the world. (iii) He remains focused on the mind in & of itself -- ardent, aware, & mindful -- putting away greed & distress with reference to the world. (iv) He remains focused on mental qualities in & of themselves -- ardent, aware, & mindful -- putting away greed & distress with reference to the world. This, monks, is called right mindfulness.
"And what, monks, is right concentration? (i) There is the case where a monk -- quite withdrawn from sensual pleasures, withdrawn from unskillful (mental) qualities -- enters & remains in the first jhana: rapture & pleasure born from withdrawal, accompanied by directed thought & evaluation (thinking is still present). (ii) With the stilling of directed thought & evaluation, he enters & remains in the second jhana: rapture & pleasure born of concentration, one-pointedness of awareness free from directed thought & evaluation -- internal assurance (thinking has stopped). (iii) With the fading of rapture, he remains in equanimity (neither stirred to like or dislike), mindful & fully aware, and physically sensitive of pleasure (once your mental force has stopped stirring, it does not obscure the reception of force that is the source of pleasure). He enters & remains in the third jhana, of which the Noble Ones declare, 'Equanimous & mindful, he has a pleasurable abiding.' (iv) With the abandoning of pleasure & pain (you need to receive force through your senses to experience pain and pleasure)-- as with the earlier disappearance of elation & distress -- he enters & remains in the fourth jhana: purity of equanimity & mindfulness, neither pleasure nor pain. This, monks, is called right concentration."
