Unnecessary MBR v GPT trouble with potentially permanent loss that may
be Microsoft’s fault:
SPECIFICALLY
MICROSOFT IS DERELICT, IT SHOULD WARN CUSTOMERS IF THEY CHOSE THE MBR PARTITION
TABLE ONLY 2TB WILL BE USEABLE.
Master Boot Record (MBR)
disks use the standard BIOS partition table. GUID Partition Table (GPT)
disks use Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). One advantage of GPT disks
is that you can have more than four partitions on each disk. GPT is
also required for disks larger than two terabytes (TB).
If
I remember correctly years ago I was left with a potentially unbootable new
computer because of this MBR v GPT formatting error that luckily somehow I
corrected with much relief.
If
your new hard disk is 4TB you must format it using GPT otherwise you end up
with only 2TB usable, the rest is wasted if you used incorrectly MBR.
When
I formatted my new 4TB hard disk from Lazada I was asked by Win 10 to choose
between MBR or GPT, I incorrectly chose MBR thinking it was the newer current
system when it was contrary, as a result I was left with a disk with two
partitions, one 2TB useable and the other 1.6TB that cannot be accessed.
Microsoft
should put a notice that GPT is newer recommended if hard disk more than 2TB.
Luckily
after much frustrating trouble trying to merge the two volumes on the hard disk
somehow I managed to Google and found MBR disks can only recognize maximum 2TB
and I had to delete existing volumes before I can ask disk management to
convert disk from MBR to GPT.
REALIZING
THE TROUBLES CUSTOMERS WILL BE SUBJECTED TO IF HE USED THE OLDER MBR, MICROSOFT
SHOULD ISSUE A MESSAGE WITH THE CHOICES ASKED THAT GPT IS PREFERRED ESPECIALLY
