Who is denying himself, the person who voluntarily chooses homelessness or the person who does not?
Jesus told a rich man to sell all his property, give the proceeds to the poor and follow him. Would the voluntarily homeless man comply with Jesus’ command?

The Andy Cole column: Keegan is a man driven by belief and emotion – not by a fast buck
People reading and the person writing thinks he speaks with great meaning or understanding when what is said makes no sense and criticises rather than compliment Keegan.
Only force can drive and force is blind and harmful and so to say Keegan is driven is not a compliment but negative.
Belief is what a person cannot see as true but he uses force to accept as true, emotion is a blind harmful stirring of mental force.
To say Keegan is driven by belief is to say he does not see what he says or does is true or right and so he uses force blindly to carry out what he says or does. If something is true it is not a belief but a fact and so Keegan’s actions is not based on facts but driven by beliefs.
It reflects delusion to think it is a compliment to say someone is driven by emotion because it means he is driven by a stirring of mental force that is blind, harmful and impairs rational decision making.
THUS HE THINKS HE IS SINGING KEEGAN’S PRAISES BUT HE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT AND HE IS ACTUALLY SAYING KEEGAN IS AN IRRATIONAL MAN WHO WILL BE DANGEROUS TO TRUST.
IF KEEGAN’S ACTIONS AND DECISIONS ARE DRIVEN BY BELIEFS (IDEAS OR PLANS HE DOES NOT SEE OR KNOW AS TRUE) AND EMOTION (A STIRRING OF MENTAL FORCE) THEN YOU WILL BE A FOOL TO ENTRUST HIM WITH STEWARDSHIP OF YOUR FOOTBALL CLUB.
Wrong view:
Right view is the first factor in the Buddha’s noble eightfold path and the destination of wrong view the Buddha says is hell or the animal womb.
Wrong view is far more rampant and serious than people realize and many do not realize they are headed for woe even for another eternity.
It is wrong view that you are speaking in praise of a person by saying he is driven by belief and emotion because you are speaking negatively about him.
It is right view, a factor of the noble eightfold path, that you are speaking negatively of a person to say his actions are driven by beliefs, plans he did not see or know are true but uses blind force to accept and carry out as true and emotion, it is a blind stirring of mental force that is the basis of his actions rather than a calm understanding of the situation.
MANY DO NOT REALIZE THEY HAVE WRONG VIEW, THE OPPOSITE OF RIGHT VIEW THAT IS A FACTOR IN THE BUDDHA’S EIGHTFOLD NOBLE PATH AND THEY ARE IN DANGER OF HELL OR THE ANIMAL WOMB.
Which do you prefer?
No matter how exquisite the pleasures through sight, sound, touch, taste and smell can be, they are scant compensation for the excruciating pains that can reach even unbearably intense & prolonged durations that are possible in this world.
Because it is force that gives pleasure as it gives pain, in order to exist in a world where there is pleasure you must also exist in a world that has potential for intense even unbearable extended pains.
The wise person or person of genuine logic does not need to think to see that it is a ‘no-brainer’, it is preferable to give up meagre pleasures in order to escape unbearable extended pains.
The foolish person is not so sure; he thinks maybe it is nevertheless worth risking and experiencing excruciating pain in order to savour pleasures.
In the end it is not a matter of choice because a person hooked on pleasures is hooked on force, is a slave of force that drives him irrationally to ever seek more pleasures until he gets fatally burnt.
IT IS INEVITABLE THAT A PERSON HOOKED ON FORCE WILL SEEK PLEASURES EVEN DESPITE AWARENESS OF POTENTIAL TERRIBLE PAINS BECAUSE HE IS A SLAVE OF FORCE THAT WILL DRIVE HIM IRRATIONALLY BLINDLY TO SEEK PLEASURES LIKE IRON FILINGS ARE IRRESISTIBLY ATTRACTED TO A NEARBY MAGNET.
A PERSON OF TRUE REASON OR UNDERSTANDING WILL NATURALLY NOT SEEK PLEASURE BECAUSE HE WILL NOT SEEK FORCE THAT IS BLIND, MEANINGLESS AND HARMFUL AND THAT NOT SEEKING FORCE AUTOMATICALLY INCLUDES NOT SEEKING PLEASURE WHICH IS A PRODUCT OF FORCE.
What is the greatest pleasure you have tasted? Good food, beautiful scenery, gentle breeze blowing, ‘sweet music’, a ‘lovely’ wife or an orgasm? No matter how pleasurable those experiences, there are strict limits as to how pleasurable they are and it is the false perception and stirred emotions of the person that makes him exclaim it is ‘unbelievable’ or ‘out of this world’.
There are potential sources of excruciating and prolonged pain in this world. Have you experienced the excruciating pain of a throbbing or searing tooth ache, stubbing your toe, the chronic agony of being ridden with cancer? By accounts the pain and torment of hell is far worse than the possible pains on earth and so the person addicted to and seeking pleasure exposes himself to potential pains that are far worse than whatever pleasures that he may enjoy here.
BECAUSE IT IS FORCE THAT IS THE SOURCE OF PLEASURE AS IT IS OF PAIN, THE PERSON WHO SEEKS PLEASURE MUST ALSO EXPOSE HIMSELF TO POTENTIAL SOURCES OF PAIN THAT WILL INEVITABLY TOUCH HIM AND WHEN HE IS STRICKEN BY PAIN AND SUFFERING THEN WHATEVER PAST PLEASURES HE HAS EXPERIENCED IS SCANT REWARD OR WORTHLESS COMPARED TO THE WOE THAT IS NOW BESETTING HIM.
THE WISE PERSON DOES NOT SEEK FORCE AND THAT AUTOMATICALLY MEANS HE DOES NOT SEEK PLEASURE THAT IS A PRODUCT OF FORCE AND BECAUSE HE DOES NOT SEEK PLEASURE, HE WILL ALSO ESCAPE PAIN AND THERE MAY BE A REALM OF EXISTENCE FREE OF FORCE WHERE THERE IS NEITHER PAIN NOR PLEASURE NOR DEATH. YOU NEED FORCE NEVER REASON TO KILL AND WERE THERE IS NO FORCE THERE IS NO KILLING AND THEREFORE DEATH.
THE FOOLISH PERSON HOOKED ON PLEASURES, SEEKING PLEASURES IS NOT SO SURE, HE FOOLISHLY THINKS THE PAIN MAY BE WORTH THE PLEASURES HE OBTAINS. IN ANY EVENT HE IS NOT A MASTER OF HIMSELF BUT HE IS A SLAVE OF HIS MENTAL FORCE THAT DRIVES HIM TO SEEK PLEASURES AND ONLY WORRY ABOUT SUFFERING WHEN IT HAPPENS BY WHICH TIME IT IS TOO LATE TO AVOID AND HE WEEPS AND GNASHES HIS TEETH.

Asian central banks have intervened in the currency markets in an attempt to slow the slide of the US dollar.
Such interventions are artificial and distort the market. Thus it is a myth that there are free markets. All capitalist markets are tampered publicly or behind the scenes by vested interests who have power to tamper.

Bernanke: financial fool or sage?

Sumatra exists because it is pushed up by the collision of the plates and it may be no accident but it indicates resistance is greatest around Padang area that Sumatra is fattest at the latitude of Padang.
This may suggest that resistance is maximal around the Padang area of the fault line and that is the reason why it has not slipped whereas the others have.
Should it finally slip, the released energy may also be correspondingly great and so the quake may be massive and there is nothing to say its final slipping will not trigger wholesale slipping along the fault line in areas that have already slipped.
Krugman rehashes oddly:
The only reason why what Krugman said below does not make sense is that he is rehashing and in his haste or distraction he failed to realize what he said is odd. It is impossible that a person specifically composing for the occasion can compose something that is odd because he will understand what is tailored to the occasion and what is tailored to the occasion cannot be odd.

Actually what he wanted to say is that anyone who thinks unemployment is not an important problem should read John Irons’ report that describes the serious problems created by unemployment. Because he is rehashing and in his haste and distraction he mangled it or rehashed the wrong sequences making what he said ‘stick up like a sore thumb’ to those who are discerning because it did not make sense.
There is no need to say ‘anyone who thinks that we’re doing enough to create jobs should read a new report from John Irons’ but the reason he said it was because it was driven by emotion to attack and put down his adversaries. Suffice to say, ‘Do not underestimate the seriousness of the unemployment problems that are described by the John Irons report.’
Pleasure is a meagre reward for pain:
No one has any reason or meaning to exist in this world and it is pleasure and the pursuit of pleasure that keep beings in this world to return again and again to be burnt by pain. It is impossible that anyone has reason to be in this world because this is a world of falsity and suffering even to murderous levels, people here are falsely impersonally rehashing to each other or counterfeiting to each other. And so it is pleasure that is the bait that keeps the foolish and wicked ensnared in this world of insanity.
In reality and theory, pleasure must by nature be shallow never rising to great heights and ephemeral or brief whilst pain that ‘lurks around every corner’ can reach intense levels that are more everlasting.
Therefore pleasure is a poor reward for the certain pains that beings existing in this world must face. Thus no being in his right mind would come to and return to this world again and again and so it is that people in this world are never in the right mind but significantly irrational or mad.
Why must pleasure be by nature shallow and brief?
Pleasure must be shallow because it is predicated on force that is mild to moderate impacting on the person experiencing pleasure. There are finite limits as to how fine the force impacting can be, too strong and it becomes pain.
IT IS MILD TO MODERATE FORCE IMPACTING THAT IS EXPERIENCED AS PLEASURE AND THERE IS LITTLE ROOM FOR EXPRESSION OF MILDNESS SO PLEASURE MUST ALWAYS BE SHALLOW.
Pleasure must by nature also be brief because it is force that is the source of pleasure and soon the force in pleasure causes stress, restlessness even sadness that puts an end to the pleasure. However tasty the food, soon it becomes loathsome when sated, however pleasurable the sex, you become sick of it after your lust is spent.
In theory as well as in practice, pain can reach intense and everlasting levels. Because the intensity of pain is proportional to the intensity of force impacting and there is no restriction on how much force can impact, in theory pain can reach searing even unbearable proportions and it can last as long as the force applied is maintained. Further, pain can through injury cause permanent scarring that is a source of continued pain, eg a broken leg in an accident may cause chronic pain and handicap for the rest of the fool’s life.
NO ONE HAS ANY REASON TO EXIST IN THIS WORLD BECAUSE IT IS A WORLD OF SUFFERING TO EVEN INTENSE LEVELS, THERE IS CONSTANT STRESS, RESTLESSNESS, INABILITY TO CONCENTRATE, SADNESS AND HURT THAT CAN REACH UNBEARABLE PROPORTIONS AND PEOPLE HERE ARE FALSELY REHASHING TO EACH OTHER APART FROM THE FALSITY OR NONSENSICALITY OF WHAT THEY SAY OR DO.
IT IS PLEASURE SEEKING THAT IS THE REASON WHY BEINGS ARE FOOLISHLY TRAPPED IN THIS WORLD.
AND PLEASURE IS A MEAGRE SHALLOW BRIEF REWARD FOR THE PAIN THAT CAN REACH INTENSE AND EVERLASTING PROPORTIONS.
THEREFORE IT TAKES A FOOL HOOKED ON PLEASURE LIKE A DRUG ADDICT TO WANT TO STAY IN THIS WORLD AND UPHOLD IT.

When they speak of ‘love’ they are speaking incorrectly of ‘like’.
They are saying they like to hate these cars or their mental forces are stirred attractively to stir repulsively at these cars.
Whether is possible or it is a falsification to exaggerate the hate they have for this car is subject to contention, even if it is true it is compounding a person’s suffering to have his mental force stirred attractively in addition to stirring repulsively at those cars.
It is tantamount to admission that the person is a robot not a specific to the occasion live person.

In the first place you should not have allowed matters to come to such a disastrous state, it is an excuse to say you don’t know or who could tell. It was foolhardiness, heedlessness and greed that allowed matters to reach to the state where disaster resulted.
Now that things are bad, the rational person will extinguish all emotion from the mind and summon genuine force free reason to fashion a solution if there is. If there are no solutions, all the anger and weeping and gnashing will not accomplish anything, wastes energy and the fool is headed for insanity.
IF YOU THINK IS NORMAL TO GET ANGRY, ANGER IS A RATIONAL RESPONSE TO A MESS YOU ARE NOW IN, YOU MAY BE A FOOL HEADED FOR INSANITY BECAUSE ANGER IS SUFFERING, MEANINGLESS, WASTES ENERGY TO CREATE STRESS AND CLOUDS THE SITUATION RATHER THAN ILLUMINATE IT.
All the excitement in the world:
Because pleasure is predicated on the mild force impacting on the person’s senses, all the excitement in the world will never add or enhance that pleasure but instead the stirred excitement (that is often for show to impress others eg the girl moans and groans with faked excitement to impress her paramour) by stirring the person’s mental force, drowns out the pleasure (or gentle reception of force) of the occasion.
BECAUSE THE NATURE OF PLEASURE IS THE RECEPTION OF THE MILD FORCES IMPACTING ON THE SENSES, PLEASURE CAN ONLY BE SO MUCH AND NO MORE AND THE MOST PLEASURE THAT CAN BE EXTRACTED IS FOR ONE WHOSE MIND IS FREED OF OTHER FORCE STIRRING TO IMBIBE THE INCOMING MILD FORCE CHANGES.
RATHER THAN ENHANCE PLEASURE, THE STIRRING OF THE PERSON’S MENTAL FORCE TO BE EXCITED DROWNS OUT THE MILD FORCE CHANGES INCOMING, HE IS WASTING HIS OWN ENERGY AND CREATING STRESS FOR HIMSELF AND OTHERS GETTING EXCITED AND IT IS CONTROLLED MADNESS THAT WILL END IN UNCONTROLLABLE MADNESS TO GET EXCITED AT ANYTHING.
NO ONE CAN ENHANCE PLEASURE BY GETTING EXCITED BUT INSTEAD EXCITEMENT BY STIRRING STRONG MENTAL FORCES DROWN OUT THE INCOMING MILD FORCE CHANGES THAT IS THE ESSENCE OF PLEASURE.
THUS YOU ARE A FOOL TO GET EXCITED ABOUT ANYTHING.
A mind and body conducive to pleasure:
If you thrive on pleasure, the secret to extracting maximum pleasure is to develop a mind that is always calm and concentrated (unified) and a relaxed body.
A body that is tensed or restless, a mind that is excited and distracted is not conducive to experiencing pleasure and so all these foolish people who pay expensive prostitutes a lot of money to service them in expensive suites but use drugs and alcohol and multiple partners and whatever to enhance their pleasure is barking up the wrong tree, is negating rather than enhancing their pleasures.
Just because you and everyone here is hooked on pleasure, cannot give up pleasure does not mean there cannot be beings who find pleasure totally meaningless even suffering and who prefer to reside in a realm where there is neither pain nor pleasure and that is a higher more longevity giving state to exist in.

It is never reason but force that is the drive at what she is saying below that is based on fantasy not fact. She made it up to poke fun at Obama’s Nobel Prize award. It is not possible Clinton or Bush spoke thus and so she is slandering them and courting insanity because to perceive what did not occur as having occurred is embracing insanity.

Big trouble may be brewing:
If it is true as reported that a cabal of nations have secretly organized to replace the US currency as the currency for oil trading with a basket of international currencies, it is going to deprive the US of a lot of wealth and they and the UK may suffer economic woe. It seems the US secretly opposed UK adopting the euro in the past so that it could be the reserve currency of the world and now that the world especially China has turned wary about the trustworthiness of the US, they are going to deprive the US of a free lunch by virtue of the US currency being reserve currency.

Iran announced late last month that its foreign currency reserves would henceforth be held in euros rather than dollars.
In the most profound financial change in recent Middle East history, Gulf Arabs are planning – along with China, Russia, Japan and France – to end dollar dealings for oil, moving instead to a basket of currencies including the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan, the euro, gold and a new, unified currency planned for nations in the Gulf Co-operation Council, including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Qatar.
Secret meetings have already been held by finance ministers and central bank governors in Russia, China, Japan and Brazil to work on the scheme, which will mean that oil will no longer be priced in dollars.
The plans, confirmed to The Independent by both Gulf Arab and Chinese banking sources in Hong Kong, may help to explain the sudden rise in gold prices, but it also augurs an extraordinary transition from dollar markets within nine years.
The Americans, who are aware the meetings have taken place – although they have not discovered the details – are sure to fight this international cabal which will include hitherto loyal allies Japan and the Gulf Arabs. Against the background to these currency meetings, Sun Bigan, China's former special envoy to the Middle East, has warned there is a risk of deepening divisions between China and the US over influence and oil in the Middle East. "Bilateral quarrels and clashes are unavoidable," he told the Asia and Africa Review. "We cannot lower vigilance against hostility in the Middle East over energy interests and security."
This sounds like a dangerous prediction of a future economic war between the US and China over Middle East oil – yet again turning the region's conflicts into a battle for great power supremacy. China uses more oil incrementally than the US because its growth is less energy efficient. The transitional currency in the move away from dollars, according to Chinese banking sources, may well be gold. An indication of the huge amounts involved can be gained from the wealth of Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar who together hold an estimated $2.1 trillion in dollar reserves.
The decline of American economic power linked to the current global recession was implicitly acknowledged by the World Bank president Robert Zoellick. "One of the legacies of this crisis may be a recognition of changed economic power relations," he said in Istanbul ahead of meetings this week of the IMF and World Bank. But it is China's extraordinary new financial power – along with past anger among oil-producing and oil-consuming nations at America's power to interfere in the international financial system – which has prompted the latest discussions involving the Gulf states.
Brazil has shown interest in collaborating in non-dollar oil payments, along with India. Indeed, China appears to be the most enthusiastic of all the financial powers involved, not least because of its enormous trade with the Middle East.
China imports 60 per cent of its oil, much of it from the Middle East and Russia. The Chinese have oil production concessions in Iraq – blocked by the US until this year – and since 2008 have held an $8bn agreement with Iran to develop refining capacity and gas resources. China has oil deals in Sudan (where it has substituted for US interests) and has been negotiating for oil concessions with Libya, where all such contracts are joint ventures.
Furthermore, Chinese exports to the region now account for no fewer than 10 per cent of the imports of every country in the Middle East, including a huge range of products from cars to weapon systems, food, clothes, even dolls. In a clear sign of China's growing financial muscle, the president of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, yesterday pleaded with Beijing to let the yuan appreciate against a sliding dollar and, by extension, loosen China's reliance on US monetary policy, to help rebalance the world economy and ease upward pressure on the euro.
Ever since the Bretton Woods agreements – the accords after the Second World War which bequeathed the architecture for the modern international financial system – America's trading partners have been left to cope with the impact of Washington's control and, in more recent years, the hegemony of the dollar as the dominant global reserve currency.
The Chinese believe, for example, that the Americans persuaded Britain to stay out of the euro in order to prevent an earlier move away from the dollar. But Chinese banking sources say their discussions have gone too far to be blocked now. "The Russians will eventually bring in the rouble to the basket of currencies," a prominent Hong Kong broker told The Independent. "The Brits are stuck in the middle and will come into the euro. They have no choice because they won't be able to use the US dollar."
Chinese financial sources believe President Barack Obama is too busy fixing the US economy to concentrate on the extraordinary implications of the transition from the dollar in nine years' time. The current deadline for the currency transition is 2018.
The US discussed the trend briefly at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh; the Chinese Central Bank governor and other officials have been worrying aloud about the dollar for years. Their problem is that much of their national wealth is tied up in dollar assets.
"These plans will change the face of international financial transactions," one Chinese banker said. "America and Britain must be very worried. You will know how worried by the thunder of denials this news will generate."
Iran announced late last month that its foreign currency reserves would henceforth be held in euros rather than dollars. Bankers remember, of course, what happened to the last Middle East oil producer to sell its oil in euros rather than dollars. A few months after Saddam Hussein trumpeted his decision, the Americans and British invaded Iraq.
Switch from dollar may further destabilize the US economy:

The US may be living off a free lunch provided by the world more than it and the world acknowledges or is aware and the deprivation of its role as reserve currency may reveal the US economic strength as it truly is, and that is much weaker than it appears to be.

Recently Iran switched to the euro as the currency of settlement for its oil exports.
Why is the EU not objecting or complaining about the use of its currency?
The reason is because it will be a windfall without work done to get a lot of money. Nobody will give you euros or USD without you giving them some assets in return and so when oil buyers buy euros to pay Iran, they must deposit some equivalent wealth with the EU that the EU can harness to use whilst Iran receives the euros that it is likely to keep for some time if its oil exports is greater than its imports to be paid in euros.

The danger in acting as reserve currency is that you forget the money you hold is not yours but held in trust and you may spend it away deluding yourself the money is yours and because your currency (eg USD) is accepted everywhere, you can keep printing more every time you get into trouble.
The downside is that once the trust in you is broken, as it may be now, people may desert you and then you are in big trouble because you have lived way beyond your means and without all this unjust parasitism flouting your position as reserve currency, you may be struggling to make ends meet.
EXACTLY HOW MUCH BENEFIT THE US GAIN FROM ITS CURRENCY BEING THE WORLD’S RESERVE CURRENCY CAN BE KNOWN, IF NOT BY YOU THEN BY GOD AND IT IS ALL UNDESERVED BENEFIT WITHOUT SWEAT OR WORK DONE, A FORM OF PARASITISM. IF THE US WERE TO BE DEPRIVED OF ITS POSITION AS CURRENCY OF TRADE, IT WOULD BE A MUCH POORER NATION.
IN THE SAME WAY THE MONEY IN BANKS ARE NOT THE BANK’S BUT HELD IN TRUST AND THESE BANKS HAVE ABUSED THEIR POSITIONS, RECKLESSLY LENDING OUT AND LOST A LARGE PROPORTION OF THE MONEY BUT THEY ARE STILL TRYING TO COVER UP.
Krugman as misguided as his opponents:
Krugman call his opponents who want credit to be tightened and government stimulus to end misguided as he espouses continued low interest rates and even greater government spending to boost the economy because he thinks the cost of idle capacity and effects of unemployment if chronic is far greater than the cost of government spending.
The Feds should have acted when the bubble was inflating to tighten lending to stave off the excesses that led to this severe crisis but now it is advocating tightening to stave off inflation.
Quote opponent’s argument: To avoid a “Great Inflation,” says Charles Plosser of the Philadelphia Fed, “we will need to act well before unemployment rates and other measures of resource utilization have returned to acceptable levels.” Jeffrey Lacker of the Richmond Fed says that rates may need to rise even if “the unemployment rate hasn’t started falling yet.”
Krugman himself is misguided in advocating massive government spending and low interest rates to promote recovery.
There may be a lot of people unemployed but is there sufficient useful employment for them out there? A lot of the work done in the past (eg building cars and planes) may have been over-consumption that the economy truly could not afford and there may be so many genuinely needed jobs waiting for workers out there.
IF A LOT OF THE JOBS AVAILABLE IN THE PAST WERE EXTRAVAGANT, EG TOO MANY PUBS, SUPERMARKETS, FACTORIES, CAR BUILDERS, HOUSE BUILDERS THEN THE COLLAPSE OF THE BUBBLE IS MERELY REVERTING TO A MORE REALISTIC POSITION WHERE THERE ARE FEWER TRULY NEEDED JOBS AVAILABLE AND IF THAT MEANS A LOT OF UNEMPLOYMENT IT IS JUST AN UNAVOIDABLE FACT OF LIFE.
DOES THE GOVERNMENT HAVE THE MONEY TO SPEND OR ARE THEY IRRESPONSIBLY PRINTING MONEY AND BORROWING FROM THE REST OF THE WORLD TO SPEND TO STIMULATE THE ECONOMY?
AS UNPALATABLE AS HIGH EMPLOYMENT IS AND THE MORBIDITY IT INFLICTS ON THE CHRONICALLY UNEMPLOYED, CAN THE TRUE ECONOMY SHORN OF EXCESSES SUPPORT SO MANY OF THE JOBS THAT IT DID IN THE PAST? IF IT CANNOT THEN YOU ARE NOT FACING THE TRUTH AND POSTPONING THE PROBLEM BY SUBSTITUTING PRIVATE SPENDING WITH PUBLIC SPENDING.
IT MAY BE TRUE AS KRUGMAN SAYS THAT THE US HAS A LOT OF SPARE OR IDLE MANUFACTURING CAPACITY THAT HE LAMENTS WILL BE LOST OR WASTED IN A DOWNTURN. BUT JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE SPARE CAPACITY DOES NOT MEAN IT CAN BE PRODUCTIVELY PUT TO USE OR IS NEEDED. CAN THAT SPARE CAPACITY BE PUT TO TRULY NEEDED USE?
IF A LOT OF PEOPLE ON HIGH SALARIES WERE TO SACRIFICE THEIR SALARIES SO THAT EMPLOYERS CAN EMPLOY MORE PEOPLE THEN MORE JOBS CAN BE CREATED BUT IF LABOR COSTS REMAINS HIGH, MANY PEOPLE WILL BE PRICED OUT OF EMPLOYMENT WHERE FEWER PEOPLE ARE DOING WORK THAT CAN BE SHARED WITH OTHERS.
Krugman’s argument is that the economy is in a dire state, many are unemployed and long term unemployment is devastating for them and the economy has a lot of idle capacity that can be utilized if the government stepped in to stimulate the economy by spending.
But what if the governments are themselves broke, the economy actually cannot support so many jobs, a lot of jobs available in the past were not needed or surplus and even if there is excess capacity, there is no demand for that capacity.
Misguided Monetary Mentalities

One lesson from the Great Depression is that you should never underestimate the destructive power of bad ideas. And some of the bad ideas that helped cause the Depression have, alas, proved all too durable: in modified form, they continue to influence economic debate today.
What ideas am I talking about? The economic historian Peter Temin has argued that a key cause of the Depression was what he calls the “gold-standard mentality.” By this he means not just belief in the sacred importance of maintaining the gold value of one’s currency, but a set of associated attitudes: obsessive fear of inflation even in the face of deflation; opposition to easy credit, even when the economy desperately needs it, on the grounds that it would be somehow corrupting; assertions that even if the government can create jobs it shouldn’t, because this would only be an “artificial” recovery.
In the early 1930s this mentality led governments to raise interest rates and slash spending, despite mass unemployment, in an attempt to defend their gold reserves. And even when countries went off gold, the prevailing mentality made them reluctant to cut rates and create jobs.
But we’re past all that now. Or are we?
America isn’t about to go back on the gold standard. But a modern version of the gold standard mentality is nonetheless exerting a growing influence on our economic discourse. And this new version of a bad old idea could undermine our chances for full recovery.
Consider first the current uproar over the declining international value of the dollar.
The truth is that the falling dollar is good news. For one thing, it’s mainly the result of rising confidence: the dollar rose at the height of the financial crisis as panicked investors sought safe haven in America, and it’s falling again now that the fear is subsiding. And a lower dollar is good for U.S. exporters, helping us make the transition away from huge trade deficits to a more sustainable international position.
But if you get your opinions from, say, The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page, you’re told that the falling dollar is a terrible thing, a sign that the world is losing faith in America (and especially, of course, in President Obama). Something, you believe, must be done to stop the dollar’s slide. And in practice the dollar’s decline has become a stick with which conservative members of Congress beat the Federal Reserve, pressuring the Fed to scale back its efforts to support the economy.
We can only hope that the Fed stands up to this pressure. But there are worrying signs of a misguided monetary mentality within the Federal Reserve system itself.
In recent weeks there have been a number of statements from Fed officials, mainly but not only presidents of regional Federal Reserve banks, calling for an early return to tighter money, including higher interest rates. Now, people in the Federal Reserve system are normally extremely circumspect when making statements about future monetary policy, so as not to step on the efforts of the Fed’s Open Market Committee, which actually sets those rates, to shape expectations. So it’s extraordinary to see all these officials suddenly breaking the implicit rules, in effect lecturing the Open Market Committee about what it should do.
What’s even more extraordinary, however, is the idea that raising rates would make sense any time soon. After all, the unemployment rate is a horrifying 9.8 percent and still rising, while inflation is running well below the Fed’s long-term target. This suggests that the Fed should be in no hurry to tighten — in fact, standard policy rules of thumb suggest that interest rates should be left on hold for the next two years or more, or until the unemployment rate has fallen to around 7 percent.
Yet some Fed officials want to pull the trigger on rates much sooner. To avoid a “Great Inflation,” says Charles Plosser of the Philadelphia Fed, “we will need to act well before unemployment rates and other measures of resource utilization have returned to acceptable levels.” Jeffrey Lacker of the Richmond Fed says that rates may need to rise even if “the unemployment rate hasn’t started falling yet.”
I don’t know what analysis lies behind these itchy trigger fingers. But it probably isn’t about analysis, anyway — it’s about mentality, the sense that central banks are supposed to act tough, not provide easy credit.
And it’s crucial that we don’t let this mentality guide policy. We do seem to have avoided a second Great Depression. But giving in to a modern version of our grandfathers’ prejudices would be a very good way to ensure the next worst thing: a prolonged era of sluggish growth and very high unemployment.
Debunking Krugman’s argument:
Supposed GM used to produce 1 million cars per year, now it is producing 600,000 cars because of falling demand.
Now GM has a spare capacity of 400,000 cars. Are you going to make GM produce the extra 400,000 cars just because it has that spare capacity that there is now no market for?
In the same way GM used to employ 10,000 workers to build those 1 million cars and now it has reduced its workforce to 6,000 workers to reflect demand. Are you going to build those 400,000 cars just so that these redundant workers can find work?
The truth may be the previous demand was false, due to people living on borrowed money (credit) and now even if GM has spare capacity, there is no use or demand for it, even though retrenched workers want auto jobs, there are no auto jobs for them so it will be foolhardy for the government to step in to artificially boost demand.
The Japanese government has stepped in during the 1980s to embark on many useless infrastructure projects (eg bridges to nowhere or an island where few people go) just to provide work for construction companies and workers but in the end it was so much wasted money.
One argument Krugman made was that there is scope to spend on green technologies (eg windmill farms to harness wind energy). But how much will these technologies contribute, can the country afford them, seeing that the governments like the private sector are full of debts and their coffers depleted by reduced tax receipts?
YOU HAVE SPENT YOURSELF INTO TROUBLE AND NOW IT IS FOLLY, POSTPONING THE INEVITABLE ADJUSTMENTS FOR GOVERNMENTS WHO ARE THEMSELVES NOT IN THE BEST ECONOMIC HEALTH TO STEP IN TO TRY TO SPEND YOURSELF OUT OF TROUBLE.
The turntable and the mind:
Because the desired musical information consists of very fine or delicate complex vibrations extracted by the stylus, a good turntable must essentially be a vibration free platform revolving at constant speed so as not to add extraneous vibrations that may colour or distort or drown the delicate musical information extracted.
In the same way, because pleasure is essentially receiving or experiencing mild force from the source of pleasure, there should not be other sources of force received at the same time nor should the mind be roiled by stirred mental force that will detract from and even mask the pleasure experience.
People in this world are hooked on pleasures but they foolishly, greedily try to maximize or augment their pleasure by simultaneously inputting many sources of pleasure at the same time, by exposing their minds to unnecessary excessive forces that mask and detract from their pleasure experience.
In order to maximize your pleasure experience, your mind must be as free from force as possible and that means no stirring your mind to be excited (attracted) or repulsed, no sadness or anxiety or fear, no using force to fabricate style in what you say or do whilst experiencing pleasure.
Thus when a person moan and groan with prolonging, changing speed and strength whilst experiencing ‘sexual ecstasy’ he or she is stirring mental force that detracts from whatever pleasure he or she is experiencing, if he or she writhes with constant prolonging, changing speed and strength whilst experiencing pleasure it too stirs unnecessary force that detracts from the pleasure.
Thinking necessitates stirring mental force with styled thinking or thinking with stretching, changing speed and loudness stirring more force than style free thinking. Thus the person who can stop thinking whilst experiencing pleasure experiences greater pleasure than the person who thinks.
If there are rival inputs, the force impacting from those rival inputs (music playing, drinking alcohol, multiple partners) actually serve to detract from the pleasure experience rather than enhance as the fool thinks.
Thus the key to maximal pleasure experience is to avoid other sources of simultaneous force inputs.
