The Chicken & The Egg:

The Chicken & The Egg:
DOUBT AND YOU MUST EXPERIENCE UNCERTAINTY. EXPERIENCE UNCERTAINTY AND YOU MUST DOUBT IN A PROCESS THAT IS MUTUALLY REINFORCING LIKE A TIGHTENING VICE THAT MUST BE SUBJECT TO FUTILE CONTROL AND WILL END IN LOSS OF CONTROL AND AGONY. JUST AS THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THEIR STRETCHING OF SYLLABLES AND CHANGING SPEED AND LOUDNESS WHILST SPEAKING, THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THEIR DOUBTING (THEY ARE LINKED) AND THEREFORE THEY IGNORE THEIR DOUBTING AND UNCERTAINTY AS THEY IGNORE THEIR STRETCHING OF SYLLABLES, HOPING FOR THE BEST. HOPING IS NEVER A FORM OF CERTAINTY BUT HOPING IS PRACTICING UNCERTAINTY THAT AGAIN LEADS TO DOUBT. THE WISE PERSON LEAVES NOTHING TO HOPE, DOES NOT HOPE FOR THE BEST BUT HE ENSURES HE IS SECURE.

(Ordinary people do not realize they practice ‘hoping for the best’ a lot of the time; for instance they drive their car through a junction when it is dicey, hoping for the best thereby practicing uncertainty. They blurt out something that comes into their minds hoping for the best)
The relationship between doubt and uncertainty may be compared to the (frivolous) contentious issue of which came first, the chicken or the egg? You certainly need a chicken to produce an egg and you certainly need an egg to produce a chicken. Does it matter?

A person who forcefully doubts himself and others is a man setting out on a lifelong journey that will be (not may be) a progressive descent into mental agony and madness unless he extricates himself from the mire of doubt and uncertainty. By forcefully doubting himself or others he becomes forcefully uncertain that then becomes itself a source for doubt in a tightening spiral of deceit and mental torment that he is forced to counter by fabricating forceful certainty to project to others (to impress them with his false confidence) and himself. Because this forceful certainty is false, stressful, a form of denial and self and other deceit that needs maintenance, it too is a source of further doubt and uncertainty that tends to tighten or intensify in a process of forceful doubting leading to uncertainty countered by faked forced certainty leading to more doubt that will end in madness.
It is in the nature of whatever that is forceful that initially you force yourself to do it, you or others force yourself to doubt and experience forceful uncertainty but increasingly (without your awareness) you are being forced to experience doubt and uncertainty rather than still having to force yourself or needing others to force yourself to do so. Every time you experience doubt and uncertainty you are further conditioning yourself to them and on every occasion you took your doubt and uncertainty to greater intensity or force, you have intensified made stronger the doubt and uncertainty you are capable of experiencing like a noose that keeps tightening around your neck that because you can loosen it a bit each time it gets too tight you think it will always remain manageable when it will ultimately strangle you unless you thenceforth work with urgency to remove it from your neck; unless thenceforth paid persistent attention to analyze your behavior for the presence of doubt and uncertainty so as to eliminate them and replacing them with calm clearly thinking passive certainty through meditation and the destruction of all mental forcefulness or emotions.
Just as there is only one insight and it is the same for self and other, there is only one doubt and uncertainty; there is no harmless doubt and uncertainty in certain situations and harmful doubt and uncertainty in others. You have false logic and perception if you think so.
FAITH AND DISCERNMENT:
If what the counselor Jesus described will say is a matter for faith or belief then identifying him precisely IS crucial (so that you know precisely who you should trust in contradistinction to others you should not) but if the counselor’s message is purely a matter for the discernment or seeing by the listener (no faith is required, it all depends on the listener) then his identity is not crucial and even irrelevant. Only a concise description of what he will do or say and to sanction (he will not speak on his own authority) what he will say suffices and the rest is dependent on the ability of the listener to discern or appreciate the truth in what he will say.
And what the counselor will say MUST BE a matter for discernment NEVER trust or faith in order to convince the world of sin, righteousness and judgment, in order to ‘take from what is mine and make it known to you.’ You cannot take from what is Jesus’ and make it known to others without demonstrating in words the truth of what Jesus said which is then a matter for the discernment not faith of the listener.
What Jesus spoke of must be sufficient to identify him (to those who are discerning not faithful) and it must be not possible for anyone else to fulfill the criteria set otherwise Jesus is speculating and venturing into falsity. No one else except the counselor will fulfill the parameters described by Jesus and whoever fulfills the parameters is the counselor. If you are undiscerning it does not matter what is said does not identify the counselor to you because you see but do not perceive, hear but do not hear and in the words of Jesus nothing can be done for them for this people's heart has grown dull, and their ears are heavy of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should perceive with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn for me to heal them.
Jesus said the counselor will convince the world of sin, righteousness and judgment.
If faith or belief or trust is needed to appreciate what someone says is true it will be impossible to convince him (because he cannot see for himself what is said is true but must have faith in another as his guide) but if only the person’s discernment or ability to see that what is said is true is required then it is clearly possible to convince that discerning person of sin, righteousness and judgment. Therefore what the counselor will say will not be based on faith, no faith or trust is required but what he says will be entirely dependent on the capacity of the person to discern, to see that it is so.
A person can only be truly convinced if he can see or discern or has insight that something is so; if he cannot see, cannot discern and have no insight something is so, he only has faith that something is so because someone else he trusts says so. Therefore in order for the counselor to convince the world of sin, righteousness and judgment, whatever he says must be logical, understandable or discernible where nobody else in the past or present can, will or dare say so. If nobody in the past and nobody in the present will convince you of these matters then whoever does that will be the counselor. If you remain unconvinced, it may not be what is said that is at fault but it may be you cannot see or who have erected an emotional barricade, emotionally refuse to see and you stubbornly cannot give up your emotional manipulative ways that you have emotionally embraced as true.
Examples of matters for faith are life after death, there is heaven, there is God and there is punishment for sin. Belief that there will be a cataclysmic close of the Age like a film show coming to an end as Jesus described is a matter of faith not discernment because no one can be certain it will happen.
That there is stretching of syllables, changes in speed and loudness are not matters of faith, does not depend on whether the person is the counselor or not but they are matters of discernment, insight or ability to see that it is so and how these phenomena are not beneficial to self or others, not innocuous but persecute self and others, lead to stress, restlessness and distraction.
Jesus said the counselor will teach you all things and take from what is his and make it known to you.
That it is necessary for a counselor to take from what is Jesus’ and make it known to you implies that people lack the discernment or ability to make known what is Jesus’ for themselves and what the counselor will speak will be matters of discernment not faith.
You can only make known something said by another person by demonstrating its truth or what it is about in a way that does not demand faith or belief by the reader. Therefore what the counselor will say to take from what is Jesus and make it known to you must demand discernment not faith and whoever takes from what is Jesus and demonstrates the veracity or truth of it must be counselor.
Jesus said it is to your advantage that he goes otherwise the counselor will not come. Therefore whoever is the counselor must do and say things that are incontrovertibly to your advantage in terms of elevating the universal suffering in stress, restlessness and distraction that afflicts all beings in this world in a way that no other man has ever done or said.
WHATEVER ANYBODY SAYS CAN ONLY BE EITHER A MATTER FOR FAITH (YOU BELIEVE OR DO NOT BELIEVE) OR DISCERNMENT (YOU CAN SEE THAT IT IS SO). THERE ARE NO OTHER POSSIBILITIES. FOR EXAMPLE IF SOMEONE SAYS HE IS A MILLIONAIRE, YOU EITHER HAVE FAITH (BELIEVE) IN HIM OR YOU DON’T. IF I SAY YOU CHANGE SPEED WHILST SPEAKING, IT IS UP TO YOU TO DISCERN OR SEE WHETHER IT IS TRUE. MATTERS OF DISCERNMENT ARE TOTALLY INDEPENDENT OF THE MESSENGER. THEY ARE VALID NO MATTER WHO SAYS IT. THEREFORE IF WHAT THE COUNSELOR WILL SAY ARE ENTIRELY MATTERS FOR DISCERNMENT NOT FAITH, IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO HE IS BUT WHAT MATTERS IS WHETHER YOU CAN OR WILL SEE THE TRUTH OF WHAT HE WILL SAY. ON THAT ABILITY WILL DETERMINE YOUR DESTINY THAT CAN ONLY BE ETERNAL PUNISHMENT OR ETERNAL LIFE.
When Jesus speaks of seeing they do not perceive and hearing they do not hear, he is referring about what the Buddha called discernment, the ability to differentiate what is true from what is false, what is harmful from what is beneficial. What Jesus spoke about is more indirect and less structured whilst what the Buddha says is more direct and structured. If you are constantly forcefully stretching your syllables, forcefully changing speed and loudness and you cannot see that even when they are the roots of the stress, restlessness and distraction you must surely experience, you truly see but do not see, hear but do not hear and nothing can be done for you.
Jesus said the counselor is the spirit of truth. Truth is never something you believe in but something you see or discern and put into practice. You believe (have faith) in what someone said or you don’t but it is false to say you believe in truth because truth is something you see. This is indication that the counselor’s message will be a message for discernment not faith or belief. All the things Jesus said the counselor will say pertain to truth (he will guide you to all the truth) that are matters for readers to see or discern and therefore the precise identity of the counselor is irrelevant. What matters is the ability of the listener to discern.
(Does what I say above make me high, medium or low standing? If you perceive what I say is accompanied by considerations of high standing, you have false perception or logic that you merely control and will ultimately descend with loss of control into mad perception and logic. If you cannot even say even one of the many things I have said with a consistence that cannot be accidental and you think I am no better than you, it may be you who thinks too highly of yourself not me. If you deny the veracity of what I say when it is uniquely insightful then you may be spurning the truth in favor of falsity and will descend in total tormenting falsity and madness in the future.)
Tiredness Is Not Blameless:
Contrary to accepted convention that tiredness is blameless, inevitable and merely a metabolic process, the great bulk of the tiredness that ordinary people must experience in their daily lives is due entirely to the abusive energy sapping totally unnecessary ways with which they behave with a whopping glutton like energy consuming style reflected in the constant stretching of syllables & motion, constant changes in speed and loudness/force.
Tiredness is not natural but it is suffering, reflects damage to their minds and bodies and a tired mind and body is vulnerable to dangers and careless commission of sins, tiredness conditions such that the person becomes more and more prone to tiredness that can grow in intensity and difficulty in shaking off.
It is only because ordinary people always do, say, think and perceive with a combination of puny substance and whopping energy consuming style with its forceful stretching of syllables and units of motion, constant changes in speed and loudness/forcefulness that whatever they say or do seem so difficult, so needing of effort and they frequently become tired, their tiredness often become intense and tenacious they struggle to extricate themselves even after rest.
Tiredness is never pleasant but it is a form of suffering in its own right that has intensity and duration that can vary from occasion to occasion and dependent on the extent with which the foolish blameworthy sufferer from tiredness abuses himself and others. Further tiredness conditions the mind so that it arises easier to more intense levels that are hard to shake off.
It is partly subconsciously that whatever they say or do is false, going against self creating stress, restlessness and distraction in the name of deceiving, pleasing, impressing, intimidating and dominating others that effort, as if weighed down by lead is needed and they are vulnerable to laziness and listlessness that is habitual or addictive with lifelong practice.
IF ONE HAD NO STYLE, ONE DID NOT FALSELY ACT TO DECEIVE, IMPRESS, PLEASE, INTIMIDATE OR DOMINATE OTHERS, THE TIREDNESS THAT ONE EXPERIENCE IN DAILY LIFE WOULD BE FAR LESS, VERY SHALLOW AND EASY TO SHRUG OFF. THEREFORE THE OCCURRENCE OF SERIOUS TIREDNESS IS A SIGN OF SELF AND OTHER ABUSE, A WARNING OF FUTURE DANGER IN STATES OF WOE, TIREDNESS IS CONDITIONING AND A TIRED PERSON IS VULNERABLE TO PHYSICAL DANGERS AND COMMITTING SINS CARELESSLY.
MANY DO NOT REALIZE THAT THE REASON WHY THEIR EYES GET TIRED WHEN THEY WATCH THEIR COMPUTER SCREENS OR TV IS BECAUSE THEY IN THEIR GREED TO ABSORB VISUAL STIMUI THEY FORGET TO SHUT THEIR EYES EARLIER THAN THEY DO; IF THEY ONLY PAY ATTENTION TO REMIND THEMSELVES TO SEE WITHOUT GREED BY SHUTTING THEIR EYES HOWEVER INTERESTING THE TOPIC, THEY WILL EXPERIENCE MUCH LESS EYESTRAIN. NOWADAYS I AUTOMATICALLY SHUT MY EYES EARLIER THAN I DID IN THE PAST NO MATTER WHAT I AM SEEING AND AS RESULT I SUFFER MUCH LESS FROM TIRED EYES.
SIMILARLY TORPOR OR DROWSINESS WHICH TOGETHER WITH SLOTH IS ONE OF THE FIVE HINDRANCES ACCORDING TO THE BUDDHA, IS NEVER BLAMELESS BUT A PRODUCT OF THE HEEDLESS ABUSIVE WAYS THE PERSON BEHAVES, IS SUFFERING NEVER PLEASANT, CONDITIONING (ADDICTIVE), EXPOSES THE PERSON TO PHYSICAL DANGERS AND CARELESSNESS TO COMMIT SINS.
Faith is only needed in as much as a person is beset by stress and restlessness that troubles him and he cannot see a way out of his woes but he believes what I say that stopping the stretching of syllables, changing speed and loudness is the way permanently out of stress and restlessness.
Not Puzzling At All:
A person who sees the truth is not puzzled by the occurrence of such phenomenon as a snake who refuses to eat a hamster offered to it. The snake and hamster may be two beings who were closely related in past lives (the Buddha said you have been wandering for so many eons that a being who has not been a parent or sibling to you is hard to find) or the snake may be more noble than many humans in refusing to kill.
As the Buddha said, you can become an animal and all the animals you see around are valid beings who are animals because of punishment (the Buddha said he cannot think of anything more tormenting than hell or the animal womb).
They may be mere animals for you to abuse as you please but one day it may be your turn to be animals to be abused by others and considering the number of animals existing, the next opportunity for you to be born a human for you to redeem yourself may be even after another eternity.

Snake 'befriends' snack hamster

Aochan, the snake 'seems to enjoy' being with Gohan, the hamster
A rodent-eating snake and a hamster have developed an unusual bond at a zoo in the Japanese capital, Tokyo.
Their relationship began in October last year, when zookeepers presented the hamster to the snake as a meal.
The rat snake, however, refused to eat the rodent. The two now share a cage, and the hamster sometimes falls asleep sitting on top of his natural foe.
"I have never seen anything like it," a zookeeper at the Mutsugoro Okoku zoo told the Associated Press News agency.
The hamster was initially offered to Aochan, the two-year-old rat snake, because it was refusing to eat frozen mice, the Associated Press news agency reports.
As a joke, the zookeeper said they named the hamster Gohan - the Japanese word for meal.
"I don't think there's any danger. Aochan seems to enjoy Gohan's company very much," zookeeper Kazuya Yamamoto told the Associated Press news agency.
Stress Is Always Deadly:
Stress is what all beings (including animals and plants) in this world experience and what they wickedly try to induce in others either directly or indirectly as poisonous emotional niceness disguised as goodness.
Stress is not mandatory to existence, it is possible to exist even here on earth without consciously or unconsciously generating stress in oneself and others and if you consciously or unconsciously generate stress in yourself and others, you are creating grave karma for yourself apart from suffering now. Because stress is a forceful emotional experience, it is conditioning so that every moment you experience stress you are conditioning yourself to stress, every moment you experience stress of greater intensity than you previously ever experienced you are deepening your capacity to experience stress so that stress progressively becomes more malignant with age, easier to arise to more intense levels that get harder to shake off and ultimately stress will turn mad, coming on to intense levels for seemingly no reason at all.
The final common pathway for stress is the across board indiscriminate addition of force in whatever ordinary people do, say, think and perceive associated with stretching of syllables and constant forceful changes in speed and loudness that impacts on the mind causing pain and because the actor keeps doing so, his mental pain from using force is insoluble and he becomes tormented.
Below is medical acknowledgement of how serious stress is:
Work stress 'heart disease link'
Stress can have a damaging impact
Stress in the workplace is a major factor in the development of heart disease and diabetes, a study says.
Stress has long been linked to ill health, but the British Medical Journal study may have identified the biological process for the first time.
The study of 10,000 civil servants found a link between stress and metabolic syndrome, which involves obesity and high blood pressure.
Experts said the University College London report was "interesting".
Lead researcher Tarani Chandola said: "Employees with chronic work stress have more than double the odds of the syndrome than those without work stress, after other risk factors are taken into account.
"The study provides evidence for the biological plausibility of psycho-social stress mechanisms linking stressors from everyday life with heart disease."
During the study between 1985 and 1999, levels of work stress were measured four times.
The researchers also measured the different aspects of metabolic syndrome - a cluster of factors which cause heart disease and diabetes - such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels between 1997 and 1999.
Factors such as social class, smoking, high alcohol consumption and lack of exercise were all recorded as part of the study.
The researchers discovered that there was a link between the amount of stress experienced in their job and the levels of metabolic syndrome symptoms, even when considering the other risk factors.
Symptoms
This relationship meant that the more stress someone suffered, the more likely they were to suffer metabolic syndrome symptoms.
The researchers said that, for example, men who suffered chronic work stress were twice as likely to develop the syndrome as men who had no exposure to stress.
Women with chronic stress were also more likely to suffer from metabolic syndrome, although they formed only a small group in the study.
The researchers said one possible explanation for the result may be that prolonged exposure to work stress affects the nervous system.
They also suggested that chronic stress may reduce biological resilience, thus disturbing the body's physiological balance.
The study also found that both men and women from lower employment grades were more likely to have metabolic syndrome, confirming past reports that social status is linked to the risk of the syndrome.
"The influence of work stress has been known to increase the likelihood of developing high blood pressure and heart disease which are factors for diabetes."
Professor Peter Weissberg, medical director of the British Heart Foundation, said stress was often linked to having little control over work.
And he added: "The good news is that many of the features of the metabolic syndrome can be reversed or improved by lifestyle changes, in particular increasing exercise and losing weight, combined with stopping smoking."
The Falsity Of Saying Every Tom. Dick & Harry:
Quote: Every Ali, Ah Chong and Muthu wants a car, and preferably a nice-looking one even if they can ill afford the monthly payments.
Comment: The statement is always false because not every Tom, Dick & Harry wants a car. Some Toms may want a motorbike whilst Tom the child or infant may not want a car.
Even though people do not give thought to the falsity of the statement or think it is harmless mischief, such statements are always accompanied by emotion (eg derision) that listeners never truly appreciate but force themselves to act as if they do. As a result, those who issue such statements and those who unthinkingly accept such statements must experience unconscious emotional conflict that fuels their doubt and uncertainty that according to the Buddha is one of three lower fetters to states of future woe.
A PERSON OF TRUTH CANNOT ISSUE SUCH STATEMENTS AS EVERY TOM, DICK AND HARRY BLAH, BLAH, BLAH AND CANNOT APPRECIATE SUCH STATEMENTS BECAUSE THEY ARE FALSE AND NEVER HARMLESS BUT EVEN DEADLY LEADING TO MENTAL CONFLICT, DOUBT AND UNCERTAINTY AND ULTIMATELY TO MAD LOGIC.
Wanting Me To Act:
The person who tells me to ‘take a hard look at yourself’ does not realize he is advising me to act and if acting leads to mental torment and even perdition after death, he is advocating grave suffering for me, is not a man of goodwill but wicked and headed for torment.
Why is he advocating I act?
You can only take a hard look at yourself if you use force to look at yourself. Anyone who uses force to do something is fabricating, adding force to whatever he does that impacts on his mind to create stress and thence restlessness and distraction. Anyone who uses force in looking at himself will be acting or looking unnaturally or falsely and a person who uses force to look at himself soon uses force in whatever he perceive, thinks, does or say and so he is trying to initiate me into acting. A lesser person would succumb and believe his wicked not good advice.
No force is needed to take a close or careful or look at yourself but undivided forceless extended attention is needed to take a close or good or careful look at yourself.
Although people who think they are intelligent and good cannot see that there is ALWAYS added force to whatever they perceive, think, do or say, what is said is evidence and an unwitting acknowledgement that he uses force, he recommends using force to see (take a hard look); proof that creatures of this world are all creatures of force (slaves NEVER masters of force) who always use force, add force to whatever they perceive, think, do or say.
Urges:
Ordinary people severely underestimate the extent with which they are driven by urges. Only on occasions when their urge to say or do something is strong such that they cannot stop themselves saying or doing it do they become aware of their urges.
The truth is whatever ordinary people is driven by force or urge that is partly voluntary and partly involuntary, they cannot help it and whatever is driven by force or there is an urge is false or emotional. Whatever reasoning backing what is said or done by urge are mere rationalizations or excuses. Just to say or do it is the reason and because it is blind and meaningless, only appear to be meaningful by make believe or self deception (he believes he scratches his head or looks at a magazine because he wants to but there is a powerful urge to avoid eye contact with another person) with the connivance of onlookers who pretend not to notice.
Urge is force and because everything people say or do is driven by force, has force added, they are driven by urges, a forceful desire to do or say something that sometimes is inappropriate for the occasion because it is done or said out of reason but out of blind force.
Prescient But Deluded:
The cataclysmic close of the Age that Jesus described may be far from farfetched but even loom closure because there is scientific evidence that mankind’s environmental rampage may be more extensive and the earth may be tottering towards instability wherein all hell will break loose far sooner than conceded.
The scientist whose theories are discussed below is more prescient than most scientists in painting a far disastrous environmental picture facing mankind and the earth but he is deluded or has wrong view to think that there is something hypothetical that mankind can do to redeem itself and civilization or human credo has anything enduring. Human life is totally deceptive, deluded and detaining each other in torment and falsity. If you want to exist, you can exist joyfully in heaven. The earth is a prison created to house hardcore prisoners including those with a religious bent and has not enduring qualities except for deluded people to play out their delusions painfully on each other.
Environment in crisis: 'We are past the point of no return'
Thirty years ago, the scientist James Lovelock worked out that the Earth possessed a planetary-scale control system which kept the environment fit for life. He called it Gaia, and the theory has become widely accepted. Now, he believes mankind's abuse of the environment is making that mechanism work against us. His astonishing conclusion - that climate change is already insoluble, and life on Earth will never be the same again.
By Michael McCarthy Environment Editor
The world has already passed the point of no return for climate change, and civilisation as we know it is now unlikely to survive, according to James Lovelock, the scientist and green guru who conceived the idea of Gaia - the Earth which keeps itself fit for life.
In a profoundly pessimistic new assessment, published in today's Independent, Professor Lovelock suggests that efforts to counter global warming cannot succeed, and that, in effect, it is already too late.
The world and human society face disaster to a worse extent, and on a faster timescale, than almost anybody realises, he believes. He writes: " Before this century is over, billions of us will die, and the few breeding pairs of people that survive will be in the Arctic where the climate remains tolerable."
In making such a statement, far gloomier than any yet made by a scientist of comparable international standing, Professor Lovelock accepts he is going out on a limb. But as the man who conceived the first wholly new way of looking at life on Earth since Charles Darwin, he feels his own analysis of what is happening leaves him no choice. He believes that it is the self-regulating mechanism of Gaia itself - increasingly accepted by other scientists worldwide, although they prefer to term it the Earth System - which, perversely, will ensure that the warming cannot be mastered.
This is because the system contains myriad feedback mechanisms which in the past have acted in concert to keep the Earth much cooler than it otherwise would be. Now, however, they will come together to amplify the warming being caused by human activities such as transport and industry through huge emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2 ).
It means that the harmful consequences of human beings damaging the living planet's ancient regulatory system will be non-linear - in other words, likely to accelerate uncontrollably.
He terms this phenomenon "The Revenge of Gaia" and examines it in detail in a new book with that title, to be published next month.
The uniqueness of the Lovelock viewpoint is that it is holistic, rather than reductionist. Although he is a committed supporter of current research into climate change, especially at Britain's Hadley Centre, he is not looking at individual facets of how the climate behaves, as other scientists inevitably are. Rather, he is looking at how the whole control system of the Earth behaves when put under stress.
Professor Lovelock, who conceived the idea of Gaia in the 1970s while examining the possibility of life on Mars for Nasa in the US, has been warning of the dangers of climate change since major concerns about it first began nearly 20 years ago.
He was one of a select group of scientists who gave an initial briefing on global warming to Margaret Thatcher's Cabinet at 10 Downing Street in April 1989.
His concerns have increased steadily since then, as evidence of a warming climate has mounted. For example, he shared the alarm of many scientists at the news last September that the ice covering the Arctic Ocean is now melting so fast that in 2005 it reached a historic low point.
Two years ago he sparked a major controversy with an article in The Independent calling on environmentalists to drop their long-standing opposition to nuclear power, which does not produce the greenhouses gases of conventional power stations.
Global warming was proceeding so fast that only a major expansion of nuclear power could bring it under control, he said. Most of the Green movement roundly rejected his call, and does so still.
Now his concerns have reached a peak - and have a new emphasis. Rather than calling for further ways of countering climate change, he is calling on governments in Britain and elsewhere to begin large-scale preparations for surviving what he now sees as inevitable - in his own phrase today, "a hell of a climate", likely to be in Europe up to 8C hotter than it is today.
In his book's concluding chapter, he writes: "What should a sensible European government be doing now? I think we have little option but to prepare for the worst, and assume that we have passed the threshold."
And in today's Independent he writes: "We will do our best to survive, but sadly I cannot see the United States or the emerging economies of China and India cutting back in time, and they are the main source of [CO2] emissions. The worst will happen ..."
He goes on: "We have to keep in mind the awesome pace of change and realise how little time is left to act, and then each community and nation must find the best use of the resources they have to sustain civilisation for as long as they can." He believes that the world's governments should plan to secure energy and food supplies in the global hothouse, and defences against the expected rise in sea levels. The scientist's vision of what human society may ultimately be reduced to through climate change is " a broken rabble led by brutal warlords."
Professor Lovelock draws attention to one aspect of the warming threat in particular, which is that the expected temperature rise is currently being held back artificially by a global aerosol - a layer of dust in the atmosphere right around the planet's northern hemisphere - which is the product of the world's industry.
This shields us from some of the sun's radiation in a phenomenon which is known as "global dimming" and is thought to be holding the global temperature down by several degrees. But with a severe industrial downturn, the aerosol could fall out of the atmosphere in a very short time, and the global temperature could take a sudden enormous leap upwards.
One of the most striking ideas in his book is that of "a guidebook for global warming survivors" aimed at the humans who would still be struggling to exist after a total societal collapse.
Written, not in electronic form, but "on durable paper with long-lasting print", it would contain the basic accumulated scientific knowledge of humanity, much of it utterly taken for granted by us now, but originally won only after a hard struggle - such as our place in the solar system, or the fact that bacteria and viruses cause infectious diseases.
Rough guide to a planet in jeopardy
Global warming, caused principally by the large-scale emissions of industrial gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), is almost certainly the greatest threat that mankind has ever faced, because it puts a question mark over the very habitability of the Earth.
Over the coming decades soaring temperatures will mean agriculture may become unviable over huge areas of the world where people are already poor and hungry; water supplies for millions or even billions may fail. Rising sea levels will destroy substantial coastal areas in low-lying countries such as Bangladesh, at the very moment when their populations are mushrooming. Numberless environmental refugees will overwhelm the capacity of any agency, or indeed any country, to cope, while modern urban infrastructure will face devastation from powerful extreme weather events, such as Hurricane Katrina which hit New Orleans last summer.
The international community accepts the reality of global warming, supported by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In its last report, in 2001, the IPCC said global average temperatures were likely to rise by up to 5.8C by 2100. In high latitudes, such as Britain, the rise is likely to be much higher, perhaps 8C. The warming seems to be proceeding faster than anticipated and in the IPCC's next report, 2007, the timescale may be shortened. Yet there still remains an assumption that climate change is controllable, if CO2 emissions can be curbed. Lovelock is warning: think again.
'The Revenge of Gaia' by James Lovelock is published by Penguin on 2 February, price £16.99

James Lovelock: The Earth is about to catch a morbid fever that may last as long as 100,000 years
Our planet has kept itself healthy and fit for life, just like an animal does, for most of the more than three billion years of its existence. It was ill luck that we started polluting at a time when the sun is too hot for comfort. We have given Gaia a fever and soon her condition will worsen to a state like a coma. She has been there before and recovered, but it took more than 100,000 years. We are responsible and will suffer the consequences: as the century progresses, the temperature will rise 8 degrees centigrade in temperate regions and 5 degrees in the tropics.
Much of the tropical land mass will become scrub and desert, and will no longer serve for regulation; this adds to the 40 per cent of the Earth's surface we have depleted to feed ourselves.
Curiously, aerosol pollution of the northern hemisphere reduces global warming by reflecting sunlight back to space. This "global dimming" is transient and could disappear in a few days like the smoke that it is, leaving us fully exposed to the heat of the global greenhouse. We are in a fool's climate, accidentally kept cool by smoke, and before this century is over billions of us will die and the few breeding pairs of people that survive will be in the Arctic where the climate remains tolerable.
By failing to see that the Earth regulates its climate and composition, we have blundered into trying to do it ourselves, acting as if we were in charge (it is the earth and not blundering mankind who is the boss). By doing this, we condemn ourselves to the worst form of slavery. If we chose to be the stewards of the Earth, then we are responsible for keeping the atmosphere, the ocean and the land surface right for life. A task we would soon find impossible - and something before we treated Gaia so badly, she had freely done for us.
To understand how impossible it is, think about how you would regulate your own temperature or the composition of your blood. Those with failing kidneys know the never-ending daily difficulty of adjusting water, salt and protein intake. The technological fix of dialysis helps, but is no replacement for living healthy kidneys.
We might then have looked upon the Earth as if it were alive, and known that we cannot pollute the air or use the Earth's skin - its forest and ocean ecosystems - as a mere source of products to feed ourselves and furnish our homes. We would have felt instinctively that those ecosystems must be left untouched because they were part of the living Earth.
So what should we do? First, we have to keep in mind the awesome pace of change and realise how little time is left to act; and then each community and nation must find the best use of the resources they have to sustain civilisation for as long as they can. Civilisation is energy-intensive and we cannot turn it off without crashing, so we need the security of a powered descent. (He may even be too optimistic or have wrong view. The earth may already be doomed as Jesus said, nothing that mankind can do even if they could act in concert, can save the earth)
Unfortunately our nation is now so urbanised as to be like a large city and we have only a small acreage of agriculture and forestry. We are dependent on the trading world for sustenance; climate change will deny us regular supplies of food and fuel from overseas.
We could grow enough to feed ourselves on the diet of the Second World War, but the notion that there is land to spare to grow biofuels, or be the site of wind farms, is ludicrous. We will do our best to survive, but sadly I cannot see the United States or the emerging economies of China and India cutting back in time, and they are the main source of emissions. The worst will happen and survivors will have to adapt to a hell of a climate.
Perhaps the saddest thing is that Gaia will lose as much or more than we do. Not only will wildlife and whole ecosystems go extinct, but in human civilisation the planet has a precious resource. We are not merely a disease; we are, through our intelligence and communication, the nervous system of the planet. Through us, Gaia has seen herself from space, and begins to know her place in the universe. (He is deluded to see human nature as redeeming, there is something enduring in human nature when it is wanton, deluded and not worth preserving which is why this age will come to a close and another new one begin)
The planetary control system that has always worked in our favour will now work against us. It has been made up of a host of positive feedback mechanisms; now, as the temperature starts to rise abnormally because of human activity, these will turn harmful in their effect, and put the situation beyond our control.
To give just a single example out of very many: the ice of the Arctic Ocean is now melting so fast it is likely to be gone in a few decades at most. Concerns are already acute about what that will mean for polar bears, who need the ice to live and hunt.
But there is more. For when the ice has vanished, there will be a dark ocean that absorbs the sun's heat, instead of an icy surface that reflects 90 per cent of it back into space; and so the planet will get even hotter still.
"If on Mars, which is a dead planet, you doubled the CO2, you could predict accurately what the temperature would rise to," he said.
"On the Earth, you can't do it, because the biota [the ensemble of life forms] reacts. As soon as you pump up the temperature, everything changes. And at the moment the system is amplifying change. "So our problem is that anything we do, like increasing the carbon dioxide, mucking about with the land, destroying forests, farming too much, things like that - they don't just produce a linear increase in temperature, they produce an amplified increase in temperature.
"And it's worse than that. Because as you approach one of the tipping points, the thresholds, the extent of amplification rapidly increases and tends towards infinity.
"The analogy I use is, it's as if we were in a pleasure boat above the Niagara Falls. You're all right as long as the engines are going, and you can get out of it. But if the engines fail, you're drawn towards the edge faster and faster, and there's no hope of getting back once you've gone over - then you're going down.
"And the uprise is just like that, the steep jump of temperature on Earth. It is exactly like the drop in the Falls."

There Will Be Famine Everywhere:
Jesus said at the close of the Age nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: all this is but the beginning of the birth-pangs. Already there is ample evidence that mankind has severely depleted the ocean fisheries but the article below indicates that if oceans keep warming a threshold may be reached that kills off phytoplankton that sustain the food chains in the ocean.
Warmer seas will wipe out plankton, source of ocean life
By Steve Connor, Science Editor
Published: 19 January 2006
The microscopic plants that underpin all life in the oceans are likely to be destroyed by global warming, a study has found.
Scientists have discovered a way that the vital plankton of the oceans can be starved of nutrients as a result of the seas getting warmer. They believe the findings have catastrophic implications for the entire marine habitat, which ultimately relies on plankton at the base of the food chain.
The study is also potentially devastating because it has thrown up a new "positive feedback" mechanism that could result in more carbon dioxide ending up in the atmosphere to cause a runaway greenhouse effect.
Scientists led by Jef Huisman of the University of Amsterdam have calculated that global warming, which is causing the temperature of the sea surface to rise, will also interfere with the vital upward movement of nutrients from the deep sea.
These nutrients, containing nitrogen, phosphorus and iron, are vital food for phytoplankton. If the supply is interrupted the plants die off, which prevents them from absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
"Global warming of the surface layers of the oceans reduces the upward transport of nutrients into the surface layers. This generates chaos among the plankton," the professor said.
The sea is one of nature's "carbon sinks", which removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and deposits the carbon in a long-term store - dissolved in the ocean or deposited as organic waste on the seabed. The vast quantities of phytoplankton in the oceans absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide. When the organisms die they fall to the seabed, carrying their store of carbon with them, where it stays for many thousands of years - thereby helping to counter global warming.
"Plankton... forms the basis of the marine food web. Moreover, phytoplankton consumes the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide during photosynthesis," Professor Huisman said. "Uptake of carbon dioxide by phytoplankton across the vast expanses of the oceans reduces the rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere."
Warmer surface water caused by global warming causes greater temperature stratification, with warm surface layers sitting on deeper, colder layers, to prevent mixing of nutrients.
Professor Huisman shows in a study published in Nature that warmer sea surfaces will deliver a potentially devastating blow to the supply of deep-sea nutrients for phytoplankton.
His computer model of the impact was tested on real measurements made in the Pacific Ocean, where sea surface temperatures tend to be higher than in other parts of the world. He found that his computer predictions of how nutrient movement would be interrupted were accurate.
"A larger temperature difference between two water layers implies less mixing of chemicals between these water layers," he said. "Global warming of the surface layers of the oceans, owing to climate change, strengthens the stratification and thereby reduces the upward mixing of nutrients."
Scientists had believed phytoplankton, which survives best at depths of about 100 metres, is largely stable and immune from the impact of global warming. "This model prediction was rather unexpected," Professor Huisman said.
"Reduced stability of the plankton, caused by global warming of the oceans, may result in a decline of oceanic production and reduced sequestration of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into the oceans."
Vital link in the food chain
Microscopic plankton comes in animal and plant forms. The plants are known as phytoplankton. They lie at the base of the marine food chain because they convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into organic carbon - food for everything else.
Smaller animals such as shrimp-like krill feed on plankton and are themselves eaten by larger organisms, from small fish to the biggest whales. Without phytoplankton, the oceans would soon because marine deserts. Phytoplankton are also important because of the role they play in the carbon cycle, which determines how much carbon dioxide - the most important greenhouse gas - ends up in the atmosphere to cause global warming. Huge amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which dissolves in the oceans, are absorbed by phytoplankton and converted to organic carbon. When the phytoplankton die, their shells and bodies sink to the seabed, carrying this carbon with them.
Phytoplankton therefore acts as a carbon "sink" which takes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and deposits the carbon in long-term stores that can remain undisturbed for thousands of years. If the growth of phytoplankton is interrupted by global warming, this ability to act as a buffer against global warming is also affected - leading to a much-feared positive feedback.

Queen Uses Blue Language:
This outburst by the queen if true is not a surprise to me but entirely to be expected. Anyone who acts, who puts on a decorous show to impress and please others must harbor ill will or hostility to self and others, must privately spew obscenities that no matter how he or she tries to conceal from public view must occasionally escape control especially with age when control mechanisms weaken and the urge in this case to utter expletives intensify with age long practice. All people who act, who are emotional who refuse to pay persistent attention to their stretching of syllables and changes of speed and loudness is nurturing their mental forces that are now monstrous and are headed for an appointment with insanity of some sort.
Anyone who expresses disbelief is pretentious and does not see things as they are. If you see things as they are you will realize that the queen is an actress like the rest and must harbor aggression and ill will and it would not be any surprise if what is purported to have been said is true.

QUEEN TELLS SHOT STAR: "I HOPE THEY CATCH THE B*****DS"
'I hope they catch the b*****ds who shot you' Queen tells star Ray
Ryan Parry In New York
THE Queen stunned rocker Ray Davies by telling him: "I hope they catch the b*****ds (bastards) who shot you!"
Kinks singer Ray - gunned down by a mugger in New Orleans last year - says he was amazed by Her Majesty's distinctly unregal outburst.
He recalls: "I could hardly believe what I'd heard. I had to wash my ears out afterwards."
Ray, 61, can't remember much of what the Queen said to him as he picked up a CBE at Buckingham Palace just two months after the shooting.
But he will never forget the moment she turned the air royal blue - and left him totally speechless.
"I was shocked," the London-born star admits in an interview with GQ magazine. He says the Queen blurted out the "b" word after saying something about "the violent times we live in".

Ray almost died in the street shooting last January.
He was in a serious condition in a Louisiana hospital for three weeks after the bullet broke a bone in his leg.
He needed two major operations to save the leg and was still using a walking stick as he arrived to collect his gong. Ray says he was flattered and impressed that the Queen knew all about his ordeal.
"She must be remarkably well-briefed. But I suppose that is what she was brought up to do and she does it so well."
The 60s legend - whose hits include Waterloo Sunset and Lola - was criticised by US cops for chasing the mugger as he ran off with his wallet.
But he says he would do it again, adding defiantly: "What are you supposed to do with these people? - Walk around saying, 'Take my money, please, I'm a tourist'?"
Last night, Buckingham Palace sources said they were shocked that such language was being attributed to the Queen.
A senior aide said sniffily: "I have never heard the Queen swear in all the time I have been working for her. I think it is highly unlikely that she would ever speak in this manner."
A spokeswoman for the Palace said she could not confirm or deny the Queen's words.
She added: "We cannot discuss private conversations."
________
ROYAL BLUE LANGUAGE
THE Queen is not the only Royal to have used colourful language in public. Prince Harry launched a tirade of expletives at a photographer as he staggered out of a night club in 2004, storming: "You f***ing w***er. Why are you f***ing doing this?"
Prince Charles, posing with William and Harry on a skiing holiday in Klosters in Switzerland last year, muttered: "Bloody people."
In 1997, Prince Philip called a Cambridge University car park attendant "a bloody silly fool" for not recognising him. And Princess Anne told reporters to "naff orf" at Badminton Horse Trials in 1976.
